This is not new. Back in 1945 the woman who would become my first wife was hospitalized long-term. She took up knitting to pass the time. She eventually recovered and got a job. We were married in 1957, and she quit her job. She decided to complete some of her knitting projects. She bought the number of skeins of yarn stated in the instructions. They didn't hold enough yarn. In order to keep the price down, in the intervening 12 years the manufacturers had steadily reduced the amount of yarn in a skein.
Nor was the problem confined to yarn. Back in the 1960s Consumer Reports regularly complained about "skinny pints" (bottles that held only 15 1/2 oz instead of the full pints you used to get). Again, to disguise a price increase by decreasing the amount of product you get but at the same old price.
