Ted Cruz: ‘Star Trek’s Captain Kirk was probably a Republican

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz offered some surprisingly strong opinions on the politics of Star Trek in an interview published Thursday in The New York Times Magazine, arguing it is quite likely that Kirk is a Republican and Picard is a Democrat.
Let me do a little psychoanalysis, Cruz says when asked about the fictional space captains from the landmark 1960s television series and its Next Generation follow-up, which aired some 30 years later. If you look at Star Trek: The Next Generation, it basically split James T. Kirk into two people. Picard was Kirks rational side, and William Riker was his passionate side. I prefer a complete captain. To be effective, you need both heart and mind.

Well, it’s a fair thing to say that Landru (TOS episode “Return of the Archons”) was a Democrat.

Crap, don't open that can of worms.
The MSM has dashed off to interview Wm Shatner as we speak. Expect lefty Shatner to say something snide about Cruz and the MSM to sneeringly play the soundbite, over and over.

Star Trek is big government utopianism. Especially after TNG.
I expect writers and actors will jump at the chance to ridicule him, because leftists are petty like that.

The tribbles definitely voted democrat. They met all the requirements. They sat around, did nothing but breed and consume resources.
I’m surprised you didn’t see them sitting on that ladder in the engine room with a brown paper bag containing a bottle of Thunderbird in front of them.

Did Cruz just say a leader might need a “Democratic side” to be “complete”?

Dunno, probably. Shatner has appeared on every TV show since 1962.

“Star Trek is big government utopianism. Especially after TNG.”
There have been a couple of non-canon books written about “Life under the Federation”. One idea is that the reason mankind expands so fast across the universe is that people are seeking to escape from “Benevolent Government”.

How about the TOS episode “This Side of Paradise”, that featured the late Jill Ireland? That episode was a fairly good comment on mindless welfare state freeloading and related ills.

No, it appears it was just you saying it.
