Being president of the United States is serious business, not a reality TV show.
This is especially true for the next president, who will have a big job ahead after the failures of the Obama administration. Our challenges are too complex and the future of our country too important to let egos, inflated rhetoric, and emotion take the place of thoughtful discussion.
I made the case recently for why GOP policies are the best to create opportunity across the country for families of all backgrounds. Ive held up my home states reforms in economic, education, and sentencing policies as examples of conservative governance that have made life better for minorities in Texas compared with other places around the country. And Ive been honest about our partys shortcomings including my own in engaging all Americans in our conversations about the future of this nation.
But we cant do that if were pitting black against white against brown; rich against poor; women against men. Playing identity politics takes a page right out of the Democrats playbook, and we Republicans are better than that.
Thats why rhetoric such as the kind employed by Donald Trump is damaging its damaging to our party, and most important, damaging to the United States of America. I believe strongly that Mr. Trumps philosophy is not conservatism, but rather a toxic mix of demagoguery and nonsense.
Mr. Trumps absurdity reached a new low over the weekend, when he spit in the eye of every American prisoner of war, particularly Senator John McCain. But frankly, we should expect no better from a man who couldnt be bothered to answer the call to serve his nation when it needed him most.
Mr. Trumps absurdity reached a new low over the weekend, when he spit in the eye of every American prisoner of war, particularly Senator John McCain.
As a veteran and the son of a veteran, I find Mr. Trumps brand of vitriol particularly offensive, and I have no confidence that he could adeptly lead our nations armed forces. His comments over the weekend should completely and immediately disqualify him from seeking our nations highest office.
Our nations warriors have been let down and left behind by the bureaucratic bungling of the Veterans Administration. They deserve a leader who will stand up for them, not one who ridicules the deadly circumstances they willingly put themselves in when they volunteer to protect our nation.
Then there is the issue of border security a challenge Mr. Trump claims to have single-handedly identified and suddenly become expert in. But Mr. Trumps ridiculous and irresponsible assertion that Texas has not done enough to secure the border betrays his fundamental misunderstanding of this issue.
And even though Mr. Trump may spend a lot of time talking about border security today, his interest doesnt predate his entrance in the presidential field. We heard no outcry from Mr. Trump when Jocelyn Johnsons husband, Rodney, was gunned down in 2006 in a sanctuary city by an individual who had previously been deported. Mr. Trump was similarly silent last summer, when we saw an unprecedented flood of unaccompanied children crossing the border because of President Obamas dangerous amnesty policies. Likewise last year, not a word from Mr. Trump when Border Patrol agent Javier Vega Jr. was shot and killed in front of his wife, two children, and parents by again individuals who had been arrested and deported multiple times.
If Mr. Trump plans to tell it like it is, then he should tell the facts. Border security is a federal responsibility. Period. But when it became clear that Washington, D.C., wouldnt act, I told President Obama that if he didnt secure the border, Texas would.
As the former governor of Texas, a state with a 1,200-mile border with Mexico, I had to live and govern under the shadow of the federal governments decades-long failure to secure our borders. And rather than sit idly by while Washington, D.C., left our communities vulnerable to a porous border, I acted.
During my time in office, I oversaw the dedication of nearly $1 billion to border-security efforts. Ive overseen surge operations with our state law enforcement, the creation of Texas Ranger Recon teams, and I even deployed the Texas National Guard to the border region last summer. I signed a bill strengthening penalties for those who engage in human trafficking a bipartisan effort to put an end to the scourge of a modern-day slave trade that is enabled by our unsecured border.
I also signed an executive order mandating the use of E-Verify for all state employees and contractors. By doing this, we ensured that people like Mr. Trump who has a history of using illegal-immigrant labor for his construction projects (including his new hotel currently under construction in Washington, D.C.) do not use taxpayer resources on illegal-immigrant labor.
That is real, tangible action. Make no mistake: Contrary to what Mr. Trump seems to believe, Texas never should have had to do any of this, but we stepped in when the federal government failed.
When it comes down to it, Mr. Trump and President Obama have similar records on border security. Neither seems to understand that its the federal governments responsibility to secure our borders. Neither has taken the time to visit the border. Neither has paid any attention to the issue until its become politically convenient. And most significantly, neither has put forward any thoughtful solutions to secure the border.
Rather than thanking Texas for stepping into a gap it shouldnt have to fill, Mr. Trump has made clear that he believes the states should fend for themselves on border security. Rather than praising the men and women of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas National Guard, and Texas game wardens, Mr. Trump ridicules their tireless work to protect our communities. Not only is this wrong, but it perpetuates the same failed policies that have left our southern border porous and vulnerable.
As Ive said before, this will be a show me, dont tell me election. Our nation needs a thoughtful, experienced leader with the character, resolve, and will to rebuild what this nation has lost over the past six years.
Mr. Trump has done nothing to prove that he is the man for the job.
Rick Perry is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He served as governor of Texas from December 2000 to January 2015. He is currently running for president.
...”Note Cruz in his wisdom is not crapping on Trump
McCain has openly beat up Cruz
Now McCain is getting shove back
Tough titty”...
McCain called all of us who support Trumps’s right to tell the truth “crazies and bigots.” However, anyone who has read the attacks on Trump would not know that part. Additionally, it is tragic when any military person is taken hostage. However, that act, outside of a personal record of bravery and courage prior to being captured, hardly makes someone a hero. I know that what we read online may be fabricated, but, yesterday I read a posting by an “Active duty Marine” who listed McCain’s military record. If true, it was not flattering. We, as citizens, have a right to judge the records of those who represent us in government and, years ago, I stopped admiring John McCain. I will choose Trump to be on my side, any time, over McCain and all of those who are trying to destroy him. Just remember, some would destroy their Mother’s if they thought that would gain them more power to enslave this population. What a lovely coalition for America...The Huffington Post, the NY Times, the WAPO, the WSJ, the National Review (which I receive) and other PC media, and nearly all those running for the Presidency on the Republican side. I think Ted Cruz, Dr. Carson and Marko Rubio are the only holdouts. Be not dismayed, though, a good cleansing might be a positive thing.
FIFTEEN years as governor and he finally deployed the Texas National Guard to the border last year. Well, color me impressed...
Meanwhile on another thread here at FR:
McCain is war hero. Period.
Unless, of course, hes a threat to Democrats and Barack Obama as he was in September of 2008 as the Republican nominee for president. Then the man whose honor is suddenly being defended by outraged Establishment figures from both parties and the media was no longer a war hero. No, back there in the fall of 2008 McCain was being savaged as a mean SOB with an uncontrollable temper a man who threatened to physically strike a wheelchair-bound, oxygen-dependent mother of a missing Vietnam serviceman. When he wasnt busy causing another woman to be slammed into a wall. And thats all well aside from using a Senate hearing to torment a third woman a witness for the families of missing servicemen with such open prosecutorial-style contempt that the woman was reduced to tears.
snip
At the time the McClatchy story was published I can find no stories reporting that then-Texas Governor Perry found McCains behavior in threatening to physically assault a wheelchair-bound mother of a missing service man as, in Perrys words about Trump, making McCain unfit to be Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Armed Forces and no stories that had Perry demanding McCain withdraw from the race for President.
Now how is Perry NOT being a hypocrite in his criticism of Trump?
And yet most everyone is fine with the lip service ploy from their favorite elected candidates.
Exactly. I’m sure we’ll feel differently about Trump’s comments once he shows us HIS military background.
Oh, wait...
How many Perry-owned hotels are being constructed by illegals?
Rick Perry said anyone who doesn’t want to give in state tuition breaks to illegals attending college “doesn’t have a heart”
Go away Rick RINO, you suck.
I don’t think you are going to get much traction defending McCain, whose true story is now coming out. This country has paid dearly for his POW status by virtue of the fact that being a POW is what made him a U.S. Senator.
From that position he has spent years damaging this country and playing on the sympathies of this nation with a war story that was 2/3’s lies.
I hope Kelli Ward cleans his clock.
“I dont think you are going to get much traction defending McCain, whose true story is now coming out. This country has paid dearly for his POW status by virtue of the fact that being a POW is what made him a U.S. Senator.”
That is exactly why McCain is now saying he wants this conversation over with. It’s not because he is being humble and playing the victim. It’s because he doesn’t want any more information being brought forth about his POW status, and stories about what really happened during his stay at the Hanoi Hilton. He wants it to remain hidden.
Well, that’s just too bad, McNasty. This is going to be fodder in the primary race against him, as well. Sometimes when you kick over a hornets nest, you get more than you bargained for.
Not defending McCain, he can do that himself.
Trump is a loose cannon and YOU KNOW that he would restate what he said, if he could but he can’t.
It’s what he does: shoot off his mouth without thinking.
Stepping in, when the Feds fail to act, is precisely what Article I, Sec. 10, of the Constitution authorizes. Governor Perry did what was right there. His gratuitous attack on another candidate, who is now supporting Texan security in a harder hitting manner than Governor Perry, is not justified.
