Dulse seaweed: a new variety, when cooked, reportedly tastes like bacon =============================================================================================
The world's most perfect food may have just arrived!
Researchers from Oregon State Universitys Hatfield Marine Science Center say theyve created and patented a new type of seaweed that has the potential to be sold commercially as the next big superfood.
The reason? It tastes just like bacon, they claim.
The bizarre but tasty creation is actually a new strain of red marine algae called dulse that is packed full of minerals and protein and looks like red lettuce.
Dulse normally grows in the wild along the Pacific and Atlantic coastlines and is harvested, dried and sold as a cooking ingredient or nutritional supplement.
Dulse is a superfood, with twice the nutritional value of kale, said Chuck Toombs, a faculty member in OSUs College of Business and a member of the team working to develop the product into a foodstuff. And OSU had developed this variety that can be farmed, with the potential for a new industry for Oregon.
The team began researching ways of farming the new strain of dulse to feed abalone, but they quickly realized its potential to do well in the human-food market.
There hasnt been a lot of interest in using it in a fresh form. But this stuff is pretty amazing, said chief researcher Chris Langdon. When you fry it, which I have done, it tastes like bacon, not seaweed. And its a pretty strong bacon flavor.
Theyve received a grant from the Oregon Department of Agriculture to explore dulse as a special crop and are working with the universitys Food Innovation Center in Portland and several chefs to find out ways dulse could be used as a main ingredient.

Welcome to FR.
Resistance is futile.
You will be assimilated.........................
Grow some fish in there too.
Yum.
Works for me...
In theory...
Green beans, Spinach, collards, any vegetable!.....................
Thanks for the info!
I think that could be good too, but I’m satisfied with them just producing this to replace meat bacon.
I like the idea of increasing the foods we eat rather than combining them down.
I wonder if the costs would be equal to or less than the costs of raising the hogs?.......................
It also sounds very healthy snack. I enjoy snacking but I snack on the bad stuff. If this taste like Bacon..shoot I probably snack all day with it.
Done right at your home, it could be.
I’ve become interested in hydroponics with a fish population mixed in. It’s interesting.
If it was studied enough, I think there’s the likelihood you could get an eco system going that would be clean and nearly self-sustaining.
A guy right around the corner from my house is doing, and has been doing EXACTLY that for probably a couple of decades, at least!
He’s a really old guy, says he’s 100, but looks no more than 70 or so.
He’s married to an Asian woman, and she doesn’t look all that old, either.
His whole back yard is on huge garden and fish farm. This is in a residential neighborhood, not some rural farm setting.
He has all kinds of weird vegetables and vines growing on and around everything. He has a bunch of barrels/drums connected together with pipes, maybe 20 or so. In the tanks are live fish and there are several types of aquatic plants growing in and out of them as well.
All he has to do is keep the water flowing and aerated. The fish eat the plants and food pellets he tosses in everyday.
For a meal, all he has to do is catch a couple of fish, some are a foot long or longer, wander around the yard picking fresh veggies of various kinds and his wife cooks them!...............
It is either bacon or it is not. Accept no substitute! (to borrow the old Porsche advertisement).
Even too much of a ‘good thing’ can be bad for you. Cows and elephants eat grass and look how BIG THEY GET!.................
I’m thinking about going that route.
There’s a lot of information out there now-a-days.
Well, rest assured that it is possible, even in a small yard. I’ve seen it and eaten from it and it doesn’t seem to be that difficult..........................
Thanks for the mention. Pretty cool actually...
Who knows? You might live to be ‘100’ as well!..............................
I’m holding out for the new bacon that tastes like kale and is better for you than seaweed ...
I’m taking steps to manage my money so I can live as long as I want.
I’m paying down debt at an accelerated rate and setting up self-insurance and savings as part of the plan.
I want to be self-sustaining if the stuff hits the fan. I’ve been leaning that direction with a six months supply on hand, but I’d like to make that a perpetual thing if I can.
This seems like a reasoned thing to do.
HELLO.... gold mine... to be developed..
ROFL ROFL OMG That is funny but you got a point there.
