Tom Tancredo to Donald Trump: Tone it down
Politico ^ | 07/13/2015 | Adam B. Lerner

Tom Tancredo thinks Donald Trump has taken his anti-immigrant rhetoric a bit too far.

The real estate mogul and 2016 presidential hopeful “needs to be a little bit more artful,” Tancredo told the Denver Post. When asked whether he supports Trump’s stance on immigration, though, Tancredo responded, “God, yes.”

.

. “He should take lessons from me on how to talk to the press. For a small fee — no, actually for a very large fee — I will help him out. You’ve got to learn how to talk about it, which takes years of practice, which God knows I’ve had,” said Tancredo.

Tancredo, a Republican from Colorado who served five terms in Congress, is perhaps best remembered for his opposition to illegal immigration and bombastic rhetoric on the subject.

“People who cannot even spell the word vote, or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House. His name is Barack Hussein Obama,” Tancredo once said in a speech at a tea party convention in 2010.

During his unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign Tancredo boycotted a debate at the University of Miami because it was being broadcast in Spanish. He also ran an ad that referred to “vicious central American gangs, now on U.S. soil, pushing drugs, raping kids, destroying lives, thanks to gutless politicians who refuse to defend our borders.”

After losing in the primaries, Tancredo introduced the Jihad Prevention Act in Congress, which required immigrants to pledge that they would not advocate sharia law in the U.S.

Republicans and Democrats alike have criticized Trump for similarly extreme rhetoric on immigration, including a statement in his announcement speech that Mexicans entering the United States illegally are “criminals” and “rapists.”

Trump has refused to apologize for the comments, instead doubling down and appearing publicly with controversial Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a prominent anti-immigration activist.

In a recent speech in Phoenix, Trump said that Mexicans “are taking our jobs. They’re taking our manufacturing jobs. They’re taking our money. They’re killing us.”

Can you please tell me how you did the italics. I’ve seen the HTML bootcamp but still can’t figure it out. Thanks.

I respect Tancredo a lot, but playing it safe and nice and artful hasn’t worked. It’s time to be blunt as heck.

Remember when Karl Rove told Tancredo, in no uncertain terms, “ You will NEVER darken the door of this White House again”.

Man, it is going to be delicious to see Tom walk through that door, invited to dine with President Trump.

That’s the problem. The political party, supposedly on our side, has been toning it down for too long, and have allowed the left to control the political agenda to our nation’s detriment. Our side needs to take the gloves off and that’s why people are responding to the no holds barred campaign of Trump.

A record of fighting with no “wins” under the belt isn’t too impressive.

Tancredo lacks results.

Tom Tancredo has a lot longer record of fighting illegal immigration than the NY blowhard.

...LOL.....so true. Trumps been concerned with illegal immigration for what, 25 minutes now?

3 years ago trump was calling the GOP meanspirited about illegal immigration.

Well if it was good enough for the goose......

One of the reasons Trump can get away with his remarks and Tancredo couldn’t is that he’s...Trump. His reputation is about being outspoken and brash. He has/had a TV show in which he’s famous for telling people “you’re fired”. Unlike a career politician, Trump will not ruin his future because he didn’t tone things down. If his political hopes fade, he can cry all the way to the bank.

It wasn’t Tancredo who said anti-immigrant, it was the author of this piece. I disagree with Tancredo though. Trump has gotten more attention on the subject in three weeks than Tancredo has in three decades.

I always liked Tancredo, but I don’t remember him getting as much attention with his immigration message. Maybe partly because his name is not Trump.

You type <i and a closing bracket at the start of the quote, then </i and a closing bracket at the end.

What’s the problem? Looks like Tancredo agrees with Trump. I guess Tancredo may be a tad jealous Trump is actually getting results and a discussion going.

Tancredo is a good man who had the courage to bring this issue up years ago. He is actually better than Trump on immigration because he not only wants to stop the flood of illegals, but also, he wants to reduce legal immigration. I have worked with him on the immigration issue.

Tancredo learned the hard way how to deal with the media and special interest groups on the immigration issue. He was pillared and attacked unmercifully by the Dems, La Raza, etc Tom Tancredo knows the immigration issue better than the vast majority of politicians, media, etc. He sounded the alarm a long time ago and paid a big price.
