... When it incorporated in 1947, this village, called Lincoln Heights, was the first primarily black self-governing community north of the Mason-Dixon line. (Today, the city has one of the highest concentrations of African American residents in the state of Ohioaccording to the Census, 95.5 percent.) Lincoln Heights thrived for a while, producing poet Nikki Giovanni, songwriters the Isley Brothers (who wrote Twist and Shout), and scholar Carl Westmoreland, who now helps run the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Hundreds of residents worked at the nearby Wright Aeronautical Plant, manufacturing the B-29 bomber, and at a chemical plant a few blocks away, putting away money to improve their homes and secure their places in the black middle class. So successful was Lincoln Heights in its early days that New Yorks governor, Thomas E. Dewey, invited prominent officials to New York City for a ticker-tape parade to honor the village as one of the only self-governing African American communities in the nation, according to Lincoln Heights, by Carolyn F. Smith.
It really was a situation where people made something out of nothing, Westmoreland said about the suburb.
But today, Lincoln Heights is struggling. Its median household income of $25,568 is less than half that of Blue Ash, a nearby majority-white suburb. About 16 percent of residents are unemployed, and one-third of families earn below the poverty level. The schools are badparents of about 40 percent of students send them to other schools in the area. The towns police and fire departments shut down in October 2014 after an insurance company pulled the villages insurance after balking at the number of lawsuits filed over civil-rights violations, wrongful terminations, and wage disputes ... The sense of community and pride that governed the towns early days have all but disappeared ...

I think you can see that in the town of Bloomfield CT...
In summary it's all whitey's fault.
What percent voted for Obama?
As a native of Bloomfield Ct with roots going back to the early 1800s I can attest to the veracity of that statement. I could write an article with almost the same words “The Destruction of a White Suburb”
95.5 percent
But the initial insult to the to-be-incorporated community, that its application was held up while neighboring communities annexed wealth-producing areas, including the Wright B-29 plant, sounds more like opportunism than racism on the part of the neighbors.
Of course, I've been wrong (lots) before.
And Republicans. And Bush. And Rush Limbaugh. And global warming. And ....
You stole my comment!
Amazing how whitey lives and breathes to destroy Black people who could have been good, rich and successful if only whitey were robbed by a socialist government or better yet, dead. I think the record is stuck. LOL
The narrative is the same as it was fifty years ago...black never fail on their own....Evil Whitey is always responsible for black failure. Yawn.
As unemployment rose, Lincoln Heights lacked a tax base deep enough to underwrite community development and other social-welfare programs.
I understand why the class-struggle and victimhood narrative of Marxism is so attractive of African Americans. They both spring from the same cargo-cult type of thinking. The gods send down limited resources over which you have no control, and you either get them, or you don't
How is it possible for whitey to continue to fool and cheat these astute people day after day?
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Coming to your Community SOON! HUD forced multicultural neighborhoods.
Where you too can experience Rape, Murder, Mayhem, Meth labs, Street Ganges, Unsafe Schools, overwhelmed Police Departments.
There's NOT one successful "majority-black populated and black-run" city in the country. I'm sure each failed city has an 'excuse based on 'white people'. It's so predictable.
That said, IF blacks in the article had financed the industry/factory in town - with their own black money and built it themselves - - they had a right to incorporate it into their town. I suspect that was NOT the case.
More fun to tax a big company then to pay property taxes. Something for nothing - money for free... Doesn't work in real life.
Was the factory concerned a 'detroit' would be done to them... that they would be taxed out of existence by people who don't understand businesses must reinvest money to stay afloat?
In short was the factory worried they would be seen as a cash cow?
It's a pattern when black democrats take over a city... in the short run they get lots of money - in the long run business leave. It's what happened to Detroit - and Gary and lots of 'black' cities'.
Which might be one of many reasons black cities fail.
My other complaint with this piece is the concept of a group of people 'feeling' like a village - it's stupid. White people, Asians, Hispanics etc don't take the emotional temperature of their neighbors to see how 'the town' is doing. It's a lame concept . For a city to work everyone needs to be acting in their own self interest... tempered with compassion... but looking out for themselves. We don't live in unicorn styled hippie communes or liberal 'villages' where there's peace and love... it's stupid.
Pretty sure they can't all be failures. Judge cities as cities, not as failed suburbs. Some of them are getting by.

One person's opinion. But not the only possible point of view.
Think Baltimore - it's 'getting by'... still.. what's the direction of the city?
The direction is 'down - 'getting worse'... I don't know if it's because of black culture or democrat culture... but the combination's bad.
Tell me about a black run vacation spot - that's nice. Or a black city that's doing better than it was doing 10 years ago. Or a black city with a low crime rate?
I mention the black vacation spot because President Obama and his family have NOT vacationed in one black community since he became President. Or maybe in his entire life...
Are there places blacks have built where they vacation and invite others to vacation? Anywhere? Anywhere in the whole country?
Blacks are often 'guests' at places other racial groups have built but they're NEVER hosts... not that I've ever seen. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Not really a fair point. Most of the best resort places were built by WASPs and almost anybody else who eventually buys in there -- Irish, Italian, etc. -- is a "guest" of a sort.
Obviously, if Pullman porters was a prestigious job in your group, you weren't going to be summering with the Vanderbilts or Morgans, except as servants.
But there's The Inkwell. And some other places.
