Trump isn’t a conservative, and he’s not even a Republican.
While I applaud him for bringing certain issues to the forefront, I have no belief that he’d actually do anything about them, even on the 1 in 1,000,000 chance he could actually get elected.
Normally, I’d be all in favor of letting Trump rant, because he’s tapping into the seething anger out there and giving frustrated people a voice. But the cost is high: he’s sucking the oxygen out of the room for more viable candidates (e.g., Ted Cruz), who need to get the media exposure, which is hard when some 40% of the nightly news broadcast is about Trump.
The only silver lining I can think of is that following the inevitable Trump implosion, it’s going to be hard to portray any remaining member of the field as the “scary, crazy one” in comparison.

100% accurate. Especially the (faux) part. Or maybe, the part of his populism is liberal (there are veins of populism that are conservative and others that are liberal).
I’m not fan of Trump. I think he’s much more liberal than most here believe. However, this sort of comment doesn’t advance the argument:
“I, on the other hand, find him tedious, tacky, and trite. He’s a bore who overcompensates for his insecurities by talking about how awesome he is, often in the third person.”
I’m pretty sure Jonah and most of the folks at National Review wouldn’t feel comfortable around me and my family. I’m also pretty sure I’m more conservative than the NRO crowd.
I wish Jonah could have gotten past his style comments and focused simply on things like:
“Trump: You have to give them a path. You have 20 million, 30 million, nobody knows what it is. It used to be 11 million. Now, today I hear it’s 11, but I don’t think it’s 11. I actually heard you probably have 30 million. You have to give them a path, and you have to make it possible for them to succeed. You have to do that.”
As it is, nancy-boy Jonah has probably created more Trump fans than anything else. He doesn’t get it - many of us don’t WANT Jonah’s admiration! If Jonah admired us, we’d be ashamed of ourselves!

I have read Jonah’s books. I know “how” he thinks and I know who his “god” is and who he bows to......prove me “wrong”. Have you followed “National Review” lately?????
I also understand that Jonah does have the ability for critical thinking.....and has the ability to state the TRUTH clearly and without obfuscation.
Why is he undermining Trump, when in this case he speaks the Truth??? He should be praising Trump for going against the political Rino machine.

No, he wasn't a "TV star". And if by that you mean he had the same ability promote a following as the manager of a local Wal-Mart, you're right.
I tried to get on the Hunter bandwagon in 2008, but it just wasn't going anywhere. Zero. Zilch. The guy just had no traction whatsoever. I suppose that was my fault personally (and I'm waiting patiently to hear how it was), but it didn't take long for me to realize that I was in a group of about a hundred strong and the group wasn't growing and I decided what's the point and bailed, and went with Thompson for awhile, and then got very very very depressed as McCain gathered steam.
Ah yes, I remember 2008 well.
But when a candidate can't gather enough people to fill a poker room in Arizona Charlie's in Las Vegas, at some point you just have to admit "this candidate can't cut it".
It reminds me of Dennis Kucinich, also from 2008, who was asked by a debate moderator, "why do you think you have a chance to be president", and Kucinich said, "I have a chance if you vote for me"... which was a clever line (I thought) and true enough on it's face, but the fact is, if a candidate is going nowhere then a candidate is going nowhere and it kind of begs the question to blame the people who like his issues but aren't following him.
At a certain point it has to come FROM the candidate. It didn't come FROM Hunter, sorry to say. And I am sincere in my sorry. I did like the guy.

Deny it all you'd like. But Thompson's tv career dates all the way back to 1987 including the very popular series, "Law and Order". That makes him a TV star.
I supported Duncan Hunter when he ran for president. He was a solid conservative on all points. Immigration was just one, a big one I admit, of the positions that made him a great candidate. Conservatives here noticed him and supported him but republicans, RINO lovers and lesser evil types (the same ones all bent out of shape because of Donald Trump) all cozied up to McCain, Romney, Rudy, and Thompson. I was extremely disappointed when Hunter had to leave the race due to lack of money and lack of attention.
Would he be in the same position right now given his stance on immigration? Who knows? It is difficult comparing apple and oranges. Remember back in 2007-2008 the republicans were known for fighting their own president (Bush) on immigration. The GOPe was talking up building a fence. Not so much crying about needing to kiss up to illegals to get the hispanic vote back then.
But things are different now. In 2011, Marco Rubio who rode into office claiming no amnesty if you vote for him, joined McCain’s gang of 8 first thing. He proceeded to cuddle with Chuck Schumer and crawled into bed with Mark Zuckerberg. He was on conservative talk Radio day after day telling us conservatives love amnesty. Talk radio gave him time. Hannity, Rush, Mark Levin, all of them crying Marco is great. The republicans/ supposed conservatives have completely sold us out over amnesty. It has gotten worse since Hunter had to leave for lack of money and MSM attention.
The great thing about Donald Trump is that they can’t use raising money against him and they can’t ignore him. He’s already a celebrity. The two things that caused Duncan Hunter to have to leave the race have been erased. Now is Donald Trump a Duncan Hunter? No, he’s a lib. But he’s doing what all the other phony conservatives/republicans refuse to do. He’s talking about and bringing attention to a subject that is extremely important to those who believe in the United States and its sovereignty and they, the Dems, the RINOs, the GOPee, and the MSM can’t stop him.
So he’s not a real conservative. Except for Cruz, neither are the others. Perhaps they are bought and paid for or too gutless (Walker) to speak up in agreement. Whatever the reason, Trump is making all the right enemies and exposing all the stealth RINOs. For that, all the establishment types are having conniptions. I just love seeing it!
I didn’t read what Jonah Goldberg wrote. Pretty much know what RINOs are going to say and I really don’t care. I’m just exceedingly glad that finally someone has the opportunity to bring up subjects I wish Duncan Hunter had been allowed to speak about.
Boy are you off-track. We were talking about Hunter, not Thompson, although Thompson did get mentioned.
I also liked Thompson, BTW, though I started out supporting Duncan Hunter.
