A woman who was shot in the back of the head with a shotgun while walking with her boyfriend in Hollywood Sunday night appeared to have been killed in a “random act of violence,” police said Monday.
The victim was identified Monday afternoon as Carrie Jean Melvin, 30, according to Lt. John Radtke with LAPD’s West Bureau Homicide. The coroner’s office confirmed the victim’s name and age and said an investigator was still working on a report.
Melvin was walking with her boyfriend near Sunset Boulevard and McCadden Place (map), about a block away from the heavily used intersection of Sunset and Highland Avenue, when she was shot and killed around 10 p.m. Sunday, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.
“At this time it appears to be a random act of violence and there’s no known motive for what happened,” Detective John Skaggs said.
The gunman approached the couple from behind and shot the woman in the back of the head using a shotgun, police at the scene said. It was unclear how many times she was shot.
Melvin was about a block from her front door when she was gunned down.
“Witnesses and the boyfriend report that the suspect just appeared and fired the gunshot,” Skaggs said. “There were no words exchanged.”
The gunman — described by Skaggs only as a black man in his 30s in dark clothing — fled the scene in a black sedan.
The boyfriend, who was not injured, was cooperating with investigators and was not in custody, Radtke said.
Neighbor Travis Holder said he heard the gunshots but thought they were post-holiday fireworks going off.
“It was very echo-y, very loud,” Holder said.

Black on white crime, I notice this story isn’t getting any national attention now if it were the other way around CNN and MSNBC would be calling this a Hate Crime but since its a white woman who was murdered its all hush hush, just a “Random act of violence”

I don't know the reason that the murder of Ms Steinle was extensively covered. They'd usually go out of their way to sweep it under the rug.
I envision a future U.S., poisoned by ethnic strife, in which private policing, or even private armies, will be the norm. Is it any wonder that a rich hard-guy like Trump is so popular?

Best solution is to treat all Black on White and White on Black crimes as hate crimes until shown otherwise. That would simplify it. Further, since police cannot protect people in California, they would rescind their laws infringing upon the 2nd amendment and allow US citizens to defend themselves.

Police are looking into a motive - Now here's a 30 year old Santa Cruz, CA transplant to L.A., working two jobs at gastropubs, walking down the street with her boyfriend in a relatively safe neighborhood (mostly white and latino) at 10PM on a Sunday night - a black gets out of a car and just executes her and drives away. I don't see drugs or organized crime in this story at all. The victim was apparently just taking a stroll. I think she was just the first white girl the killer came across this night
Eighty percent, from less than 13 percent of the population. In other words, blacks committed interracial violent crime at a rate 27 times that of non-blacks.
They are an incredibly violent people.
