Vatican City (AFP) - Pope Francis said Wednesday that it may be "morally necessary" for some families to split up, marking a change of tone in the Catholic Church's attitude to troubled marriages.
"There are cases in which separation is inevitable," he said during his weekly general audience, with a message hoping to encourage greater compassion in the Church ahead of a highly anticipated global meeting on family life in October.
"Sometimes, it can even be morally necessary, when it's about shielding the weaker spouse or young children from the more serious wounds caused by intimidation and violence, humiliation and exploitation," he said.
Francis said there were many families in "irregular situations" and the question should be how to best help them, and "how to accompany them so that the child does not become daddy or mummy's hostage".
The issue is likely to be addressed during the upcoming synod -- a gathering of bishops -- on the family, which Francis hopes will help reconcile Catholic thinking with the realities of believers' lives in the early 21st century.
A first synod on the issues last year saw riled conservative bishops mobilise to block the approval of language heralding an unprecedented opening to the gay community and greater flexibility on the treatment of divorced Catholics.

“But you still aint going up for communion.”
What? I have no idea what you mean.
“Much more importantly, what does the Bible say?”
Jesus too allowed divorce - in cases of adultery - but He did not allow remarriage unlike what many Protestants falsely believe. Thus, what the Catechism says is in perfect keeping with the Bible.
But it’s ALREADY IN THE CATECHISM.
The words of Jesus:
But I say to you, Whoever puts away his wife, apart from a matter of fornication, causes her to commit adultery. And whoever shall marry the one put away commits adultery. Matthew 5:31,32
Something changed then, since the 50’s, early 60’s when I last had contact with anything Catholic
In the NINETEEN THIRTIES, my paternal grandmother had to divorce my paternal grandfather, in order to protect her family. She never attempted to marry again. Thus, she was never barred from the sacraments, certainly not from the Eucharist. She died many decades later, a faithful daughter of the Church.
Lol. That's pretty funny. The Bible says adultery, the catechism says legal rights, care of children or protection of inheritance (without mention of adultery), which means it is completely NOT in line with the Bible.
No, he’s not talking about that. He’s warming up for his Communion for the divorced and remarried (without an annulment, in other words, to judge that the marriage never fully existed).
A civil divorce is a civil act done for legal reasons. However, that doesn’t mean that the marriage was not valid or that the civil act supplants the religious covenant.
And yet he is implying that the two are the same, and this is obviously the approach that Kasper and his crowd are working towards. Make Church law and civil law one and the same. If the state says divorce is okay , polygamy is ok, gay “marriage” is ok, then the Church is simply a rubber stamp.
Divorce in the Bible was related to Jewish law, which was different from our current civil law.
Under civil law, some might need to divorce in order for protection.
I went to Catholic School, have been a Catholic all my life....
you can drink the P.C. crap if you want, but I shall not!!!
If a person divorces for legitimate reasons and does not marry someone else (unless the first marriage is declared null), then there is no sin and the person may receive the Eucharist.
“Something changed then, since the 50s, early 60s when I last had contact with anything Catholic”
Nope. It was written about even then. Look it up.
That may be where the writer of this article would like to take this topic, but that's not what the pope said. He talked about separation, not divorce and remarriage. This is the standard language we used all our lives to describe what we were taught about my family's circumstance, “The Church allows separation in necessary cases, and even tolerates a civil divorce, for legal purposes, but the marriage is still valid, and except upon the death of one of the spouses, there can be no second marriage.”
If Bergoglio moves beyond this, THEN it becomes problematic.

So you believe a woman should stay with her husband in the same house and not divorce even if the husband is say beating the children?
“I went to Catholic School, have been a Catholic all my life....”
Irrelevant. When was the last time you read CCC No. 2383?
“you can drink the P.C. crap if you want, but I shall not!!!”
No. 2383 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is not “P.C. crap”. It’s the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
Using the word “hostage” was a bridge too far I think.
If the husband is beating the child, then he needs to go to jail
The Catholic Church has for a VERY long time tolerated separation in cases where it’s necessary for peace or safety.
This is not news except for secular outlets pushing agendas who want to imply that with just a little nudge the Catholic Church can be made to support “what-you-will”.
When it comes to reporting on the Catholic Church, the secular media are hopelessly ignorant, incompetent, and biased. Only a fool would take them seriously.
I understand what you are saying...and we all have some sort of abuse in our lives....
I was in an abusive relationship, but my Pastor helped me to get the care and help I needed....
It just sounds to me that this Pope is all over the place, and I’m not the only one saying that...he is getting into things that we don’t think he should be...
I loved John Paul 11 and Pope Benedict, but this Pope is just not making any sense to a lot of us followers....maybe this is the time for our faith to kick in or something...
Oh now I see...Your anti-Catholic....that explains it...
What does the Bible say?
