House approves fast-track 218-208, sending bill to Senate

The House on Thursday took the first step toward resuscitating the White House’s trade agenda by passing legislation granting President Obama fast-track authority.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where the White House and GOP leaders are seeking to strike a deal with pro-trade Democrats.

The House vote was 218-208, with 28 Democrats voting for it.

This is the second time in a week the House has voted to approve the controversial fast-track bill. On Friday, the House voted 219-211 in favor of fast-track, which would make it easier for Obama to complete a sweeping trans-Pacific trade deal.

In last week’s vote, the House GOP paired the fast-track bill with a measure known as Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) that gives aid to workers displaced by trade. Both measures needed to be approved in separate votes for the entire package to move forward.

House Democrats have historically favored TAA, but they voted against it on Friday to kill fast-track, which is deeply opposed by unions and other liberal groups.

The White House still wants both measures to reach Obama’s desk, but is now advancing a different strategy that would see the two bills move separately.

My Sister says the same thing and I am about in agreement.

We voted in 2010 and 2014 to elect what we thought were people who said they were going to draw the line in the sand in Washington and what happened , Nothing.

So I now expect nothing, these people we elect who promise to really change things get up there, get seduced by the power or pressured to go along and the Will of the People mean nothing anymore.

I am just about to the point of not voting for Federal Candidates any longer, I am not sure there is any hope really left, this country in on a destructive course and the ship of state cannot be turned from disaster.

Seriously? The fix is in. I truly think that Ted Cruz’ support of this sewage will end his chances. Bob

“Yea I’m done too.
No more pretending that who we elect makes a damn difference.”

Welcome aboard! At this rate, the anti-voting block will win in 2016.

If GOP members are afraid of Boehner and his gay posse then how did they beat their Dem opponent to win the seat?

Cowards.

“How about the 190 Republicans who voted FOR it?”

Those weren’t really republicans. They were fascist
democrats posing as republicans.

....”That is exactly what TPA does. It makes Congress part of the process, restricts the President in what he can do, and requires him to regularly report on the negotiations to Congress. Without TPA, the public gets No review.”....

But many oppose it believing that passing TPA opens the way for passage of TPP which they don’t want.

158 Democrats voted AGAINST Fast Track and 190 Republicans voted in favor.
Just look at the way the Mainstream Media is covering the vote:
USA Today
WASHINGTON—The U.S. House narrowly approved, 218-208, a six-year renewal of trade promotion authority in an ongoing effort to revive President Obama’s trade agenda in the face of stiff Democratic opposition.

Republicans, working closely with the White House, are executing a new strategy to pass the authority, also known as TPA or “fast track,” as well as trade adjustment assistance (TAA), an aid program for displaced American workers.

What happens if TPP comes to Congress and we don’t have a chance to review it? Does that make the process better or worse?

I don’t think TPP will be passed. For one thing, nobody trusts Obama, he is the worst negotiator Ever, and Congress has not had the input and oversight of the agreement that they should have had.

The TPA not only does that, it cures impedigo, removes stains, and it slices and juliennes fries! Its not just a job killer and globalist enrichment act, it’s the trade bill of 140 uses!

Buy your TPA o matic for only a billion dollars in campaign contributions. Its a bargain at twice the price!

But that’s not all. Act now and we’ll throw in the TPP, and a special CD of John Boehner singing his favorite Christmas tunes!

The TPA o matic. Get it at your Chamber Of Crony Capitalists!

“him to regularly report on the negotiations to Congress. Without TPA, the public gets No review”

But the negotiations are mostly over. They’ve been done in secret and will remain secret.
Only ‘future’ negotiations will be subject to the TPA.
To pass TPP as a treaty would require 2/3 of the Senate and to get those votes much would have to be revealed, of both past and future negotiations.
So this argument isn’t persuasive.

If TPA was up for a vote when only preliminary deal-making had started I’d *tend* to support it- though the present team in Washington is very suspect, to say the least- as there is an advantage in having more certainty that the final ‘deal’ will pass.

I still support passage of TPA....

As for TPP....not enough is known about it except the “thunder” from politicians etc. both for and against it..and a lot of fear-mongering and misunderstandings.

Further even if they passed TPP it has so many hoops to go thru before it can be even implemented which likely will not be until after the election.

TPP should not be supported. Unless it gets delayed so that someone, a President Cruz for instance, can review and finalize it, it should be voted down.
