Media are reporting an armored van, with what appears to be gun ports on rear, opened fire overnight in front of the Dallas Police Department.

They are often sold as surplus. Usually they’re bought by security firms, couriers and the like - or by third world militaries/guards.

Someone else found the ebay link to what’s possibly the actual vehicle, I trans-posted it upthread a few posts.

Dont forget Shawn Nelson who stole an M60a3 MBT and drove around until he centered himself and was shot attempting to track pivot off the center concrete rail.

Also, the fact that this was sold surplus may have been a saving grace. One problem with the style of gun port they installed on these conversion vans is the extremely limited field of fire. It also does not allow use of the weapon’s sights except with exceptional difficulty and contortions. If this is the eBay van, dude should have learned then practiced shooting from the vehicle if he wanted to hit someone.

It’s fortunate because so far he’s not managed to significantly injure anyone else because of that.

My immediate reaction was “I bet some .50 AP would punch right through that armored van.”

There were reports of as many as four people exiting the van then just one getting back in. Only one has been cornered - they have him and the van surrounded in the nearby town of Hutchins, but he has yet to surrender or be hauled in.

If you listen to some of the videos, it sounds like *someone* fired some measured large bore rifle shots, not sure if it was the police or a van gunner.

Depends on what Lenco conversion package that van is. Lenco doesn’t do conversions like that any more for various reasons but when they did, they had optional packages that would let it shrug off .50BMG AP rounds.

One other thing - those conversions have no forward gun ports, no roof hatch and the engine bay isn’t actually armored. Get in front of it and start firing into the radiator, engine, etc., etc.

I don’t remember if those had firewall armor to protect the occupants. If didn’t, all the more reason to pour fire into the front.

I don't know about that. The eBay ad doesn't show all the armor, but what's visible inside is impressive and doesn't include possibilities like kevlar 'blankets' or other fillers between the inner plate armor and the outer bodywork. The eBay ad also claims 'Mil-Spec' armor so who knows?
