FOOD FOR THE SOUL: THE CHOPIN NOCTURNESThe opening makes you wonder for a second if Fred is going for the minor or the major. The middle section in D-flat turns to chords instead of a sinuous melodic line.
Chopin: Nocturne in F# minor, Op. 48/2

FOOD FOR THE SOUL: THE CHOPIN NOCTURNESThis is another well known piece. There are phrases reminiscent of the Fantasy-Impromptu and the Piano Concerto #2. The middle section shows passion before it returns to the opening material. Watch how he makes the ending just vanish.
Chopin: Nocturne in F minor, Op. 55/1

FOOD FOR THE SOUL: THE CHOPIN NOCTURNESUnlike his earlier nocturne in this key, Fred moves carefully between light and dark by using odd harmonies.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL: THE CHOPIN NOCTURNESThis two-nocturne opus was written in 1846 when Chopin was 36 and being eaten slowly to death by tuberculosis. After hearing the unusual harmonies Fred uses, I suspect that had he lived long enough to hear Wagners Tristan, he wouldnt have been all that shocked.
Chopin: Nocturne in B, Op. 64/1

FOOD FOR THE SOUL: THE CHOPIN NOCTURNESThis last nocturne is just as harmonically adventurous as its partner. And so we rest for tonight.
