An Open Letter to the Folks Who Fact Check Gun Reporting at the Associated Press

This is what happens when people who do not know anything about guns write news stories about guns.

The Associated Press has issued a correction regarding its reporting on the biker gang shootout in Waco, Texas.

Here is their statement:

In a story June 6 about a shootout involving bikers in Waco, The Associated Press reported erroneously that witnesses said the sound of semi-automatic gunfire dominated the shootout. They said the shootout was dominated by what sounded like short bursts of automatic gunfire. The AP also erroneously reported that a semi-automatic weapon can shoot more bullets in less time than a small-caliber weapon. The story should have said that an automatic weapon can fire multiple rounds more quickly than a semi-automatic weapon.

I think there was a course offered recently for "journalists" on reporting these things. Such as:

If a Dan Wesson .357 semi-auto revolver is fitted with a silencer, the .50 cal cartridge gains much more velocity and destructive power since the sound energy is now transferred into the 20mm projectile making it travel many more miles per second than without a muffler attenuator. Or something. Add a forestock grip and no telling how much damage could be done.

Couple that Dan Wesson with some XRBR ammo:

Xtreme Rabid Badger Rounds signal a paradigm shift in home defense and anti-terrorism ammunition. Utilizing the same state of the art technology that puts foam dinosaurs in those plastic capsules that dissolve in hot water, I’ve been able to enhance what would be otherwise boring hollowpoint ammunition with a rabid badger core. The exact process is like, totally secret and proprietary.

Upon striking the body of your target, a rabid badger is unleashed through a process that involves a lot of really hard to understand math and physics calculations, and possibly some magic. The resulting stopping power goes beyond devastating, and is actually completely unable to be measured. In every ballistic test conducted, the badger ate the gelatin block, and then quickly turned on the testers.

My cores use very expensive laboratory grade badgers that are 99.9% pure, and 100% insane with rabies.

The shock of a rabid badger bursting from a teammate’s body and then going totally nuts adds a psychological warfare element unmatched by any other ammunition maker in the industry today. To further enhance this, I took a cue from the A-10 Warthog, and painted a scary face on each and every round.

Already in use by Elite Team Fighting and many other highly trained special operations forces around the world, XRBR rounds represent the zenith in small arms ammunition technology. Get yours today!

My Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gunfighter training covered the things to worry about if you see a bad gun:

1. Does the weapon have a threaded barrel?
2. Does the weapon have a bayonet lug?
3. Does the weapon have a pistol grip?
4. Does the weapon have a grenade launcher?
5. Does the weapon have a folding stock?

According to my Bloomberg-certified instructor, if you don’t see any of those things, you’re not facing an assault rifle, so you don’t have to worry about anything. Without those deadly features, the rifle cannot shoot anywhere near as quickly (feet per second and rounds per minute both!).

That’s nothing compared to the power of a full auto AK revolver.

” The exact process is like, totally secret and proprietary.” You mean like the tpp top secret bill that must be signed before one can see what’s in it? Hey if Paul Ryan supports that...................

Do they walk to school or carry their lunch?

But if it’s a fully automatic revolver you’d better spring for the 80-round clip.

Good point. Painting them black makes them assault weapons, and assault weapons are more dangerous because they are high-caliber.

Is there any way to have an online openly available AP style book? It is the reporter’s big brother writing guidebook. The AP considers writing any other way to be a hate crime or thought crime.

The AP does not care about reporting truth only achieving a desired result. In this case the abolition of the second amendment civil right.

You will probably not find an automatic weapon at a crime scene.
I bet the government agents (cops, BATF) had and used weapons that are capable of automatic fire. The AP noted that it put words in the witnesses' mouths, when witnesses said "heard what sounded like automatic fire," and the AP reported that as "heard what sounded like semi-automatic fire."

Did the bikers have “cop killer” bullets and the cops “biker killer” bullets?
Seems the autopsy’s should be able to tell who shot who by that revelation.

They move people around in news orgs. One day a sports writer the next day an aviation expert followed by maybe writing about hog futures or something.

the AP style guide is the “bible” reporters HAVE to use for the AP to distribute a story.

IE they mandated pro-choice over all other words. They mandate “anti-abortion” vs “pro-life” (though it does flex on occasion)

The style guide is the go to goebls book put out by the AP.

“Did the bikers have “cop killer” bullets and the cops “biker killer” bullets?

But where is all that information? Likely answer, the Whacko PD are working OT trying to “craft” a scenario that makes them appear to be blameless and still fit the physical evidence. Why else has there been no release of any pertinent information, like whose bullet actually killed each of the deceased as well as those wounded? When all of this goes into court, hopefully in another county far removed from Whacko, it’s going to be interesting to see how the “evidence” is presented. Hopefully in front of a real judge, not some old coot who doesn’t have a law degree.
