Curious how NOT to capsize your fishing vessel in heavy seas?
New Zealand journalist Geoff Mackley decided to visit the infamous Greymouth Bar, grab the saltiest old sea-captain he could find; an unintelligible yet undeniably talented Kiwi fisherman, and ask that very question. The dialogue in this video is impossible to understand but, trust us, amid the profanity is secret to heavy surf shiphandling.

Lots of give and take.
Run down the face of the wave and slide back down the backside.

The abandon bar is pretty dangerous. My Mother was visiting her across the street neighbors and saw a boat get in trouble and capsize. All those on the boat died. They had long experience going in and out of abandon but it dint do them any good that day. Particularly sad is the fact their family saw everything.

Look, if you can’t cross the bar without capsizing, it’s time to call a taxi.

Stout little boat.
Running down the face of a heavy following sea is an instinctual art.

And to think that I used to go out into the Gulf of Mexico in a 12-foot, aluminum flatboat! ;-)

That reminded me of a trip back to Long Beach from three days fishing the rigs 90 miles south of Gulfport. We were catching nice snapper so the tropical depression and massive seas were just an inconvenience.

Reminds me of 30 years ago and a few anxious moments coming through to Potato Patch outside the Golden gate.
My boat was a little bigger, but still.
