Republican presidential candidates travel far and wide to meet with casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson, seeking out his generous support. Not as many people talk about the other person in the room his wife.
In the late 1980s, Miriam Ochshorn was living in New York. Already a successful Israeli doctor, she had come to the United States for a fellowship in addiction medicine in 1986. She was divorced, and the mother of two daughters.
One day, she got a call from a childhood friend, who was also now living in the United States. The friend, Sara Aronson, had just run into a man Sara knew in a Brookline, Massachusetts, deli. He was also single and was looking to meet an Israeli woman. Could Sara give him her number? Miriam said yes.
The man was Sheldon Adelson. He was wealthy far from his working-class upbringing as the son of a Dorchester taxi driver but at an inflection point. He was still a few years from selling Comdex, the computer trade show company hed built, for $862 million. He was close to buying the Las Vegas Sands, his first entrée into what would be a very lucrative Vegas career. He had only just started visiting Israel. She funded Newt last primary 5 Million a week
Now that’s a good woman.
Miriam "loves her some Ted Cruz," one person familiar with her comments said.
Ping.
She wasted her money on that RINO loser. I hope she chooses someone better this time.
Adelson supports amnesty from what I gather and his support of Newt was to split support with other candidates so the anointed GOP candidate, Romney, could win.
Money will be vital to this campaign and the candidate I support (Cruz) and I intend to open my spigot wider as the contests of early next year draw near.
Save your $$$$ now so you can wisely spend the larger amounts at the critical moment.
Adelson did give a lot of money to Romney after Mitt got the nomination, but really, do you think he needed to give Gingrich any money to prevent Paul or Santorum or Cain or Bachmann or Perry or Huntsman from getting the nomination?
Those Gingrich ads had potential to hurt Romney in the general election. If Romney were really Adelson's first choice he wouldn't have given Gingrich the money.
Uncle Shel likely favors Rubio, because he can be bought. On the other hand, Mariam will make certain that Sen. Cruz gets some money, because he can’t be bought.
