The engineer driving the Amtrak train that derailed survived the Tuesday night crash will play a key role in the investigation into what happened.
The identity of the engineer has not been publicly released, but authorities said he has already met with investigators.
The train's engineer initially spoke with investigators Tuesday night. He was treated at a hospital and then released and transported to the Philadelphia Police Department. He later declined to provide a formal statement to police and requested a lawyer, which he now has.
ABC News can confirm that they were reportedly meeting with federal accident investigators and other rail personnel this afternoon.

Mechanical malfunction is always a possibility, stuck throttle perhaps.
But why let the train reach 100 mph before hitting emergency brake at last seconds before curve ?
These crashes, like planes, are almost always a series of failures and mistakes that happen rapidly. Equipment, environment and error (human).
Exceptions - Terrorism and intentional pilot suicide.
I'm waiting for more information before I knee jerk on a headline.

Hard to believe such seemingly simple measures aren’t already in place on the lines. I wonder if this is common throughout the passenger and freight train industries?
All the "shovel-ready" infrastructure money he already took seems to have evaporated into thin air with nothing to show for it.
Those projects could have begun immediately had Obama signed an EO suspending the EPA rules for those projects. But that would have infuriated the Greens.
We have a number of projects here in Washington state that have been fully funded by the Feds, but the EPA hasn't sprinkled holy water on them because the environmental impact statements are still being written.
It’s called a dead mans switch. And they’ve been on trains for a while.
I can remember the UTU’s impassioned arguments against any form of automation from 35 years ago when the company I worked for wanted to put in an automated ore haul with the operator in a tower overlooking the yard. No they said, for safety’s sake you must have a conductor, engineer and fireman on each train. The Railway Labor Act made their bargaining power formidable to say the least. The other seven unions and the company could be hamstrung unless the UTU was happy. To top it off, they did maybe an hour and a half’s work in an eight hour shift.

Wow, that’s actually a classy statement. Did someone else write it for him, or is it one of those rare moments of lucidity?
Socialized transportation at work.
Is his name Mohammed?
Rearden metal is good!
It got 0bama re-selected, so it was put to some kind of use.
Whether he’s guilty or not, he’s well within his rights to do so and I would suggest that you would too if you’re in a similar situation.
Unless there was something wrong with the controls, this guy is in deep trouble.
It's Brandon.
