Minnesota's childhood obesity problem is a threat to national security, a group of retired military generals said Thursday in St. Paul. Mission: Readiness, a national nonprofit group of more than 500 retired senior military leaders, says one-third of young Americans are too overweight for military service. In Minnesota, it said, 69 percent are unqualified for duty for a variety of reasons, including obesity, asthma, criminal histories and the location of their tattoos. In a report called "Too Fat, Frail and Out-of-Breath to Fight," the group highlighted three ways to address physical fitness in America's youth: -- More community paths for walking and biking. -- More physical education in schools. -- Congress should stick with healthier lunch rules that schools have been phasing in since 2012.

Easy solution, just lower the standards like you did when you wanted to increase the amount of women in the military. Anything else would obviously be discriminatory to the obese.
Yes, and how about more sports like dodge ball and kick ball.
How about the students take some responsibility for their own health-less screen time with the computer or TV.

Gee.
Maybe we could start a training program for new recruits to get them into shape so they could serve. Break them down and then build them up.
If only previous generations had done that.
Just to be clear, I never wanted that.
Have you read lately how the womyn are doing in Ranger training (what we used to call ‘RIP’) ?
Add a few weeks to basic training for the extra fat fatty group.
No more ‘unfair’ than longer AITs for some MOS than others.
I used to be a little fat kid with undiagnosed asthma. My solution was two-fold—having a WWII vet for a Dad (the real deal who actually killed some nazis) and deciding that I would get in shape by doing the hardest thing for me at the time—running.
Now at age 68 I still have asthma and arthritis, but I’m able to walk a couple of miles every day and do most of what I want.
This could have an upside... if they are too fat to fight... they also might be too fat to riot!
lol
Yep, they are systematically destroying the greatest military in the world.
We have an all volunteer force. We are discharging veterans at a rate not seen since WWII. We don’t have a problem meeting recruiting quotas.
Who cares if a bunch of kids are too fat to serve? If push comes to shove and we start drafting fat kids, Extra PT combined with limited chow intake (Ala Private “Pyle” in Full Metal Jacket) will rectify the situation in a few weeks.
Maybe the lighter kids should use the heavy ones as catapult missiles?
As an Army vet, I agree. It all went downhill when they let us women into the military. *Rolleyes*
I mean, why did we need to get so uppity and actually JOIN? Why didn’t we know our place on the battlefield as did Oh, say, Molly Pitcher, Florence Nightingale, Gabrielle Petit, Elsie Inglis, Maria Bochkareva, Elsie Ott, Susan Travers, Lyudmila Pavlichenko or any modern day female Israeli?
Learn your history. We women have been fighting for freedom right beside our men the world over since the first shot was fired, but, by all means, make sure our collective contributions are ignored due to male ego, LOL!
How about female Military Police dogs or IED-sniffing dogs? Is that kosher? *SNORT*
Have YOU served your Nation? If not, then STFU.
My father was a WW II vet, as well. I don't know if he killed any Nazis; he wouldn't talk about it. But he, too, was "the real deal"; he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
All WW II vets were "the real deal" just by virtue of the fact they were THERE.
"Now at age 68 I still have asthma and arthritis, but Im able to walk a couple of miles every day and do most of what I want."
I'm 51, and I agree that "use it or lose it" is more than a cliche---it's true. I've worked out for most of my life. To be honest, I'm burned out on it, but I know I have to keep it up.
Too much fodder for the cannon fodder.
Minnesota’s kids are too fat to fight? Funny, I don’t remember ISIS complaining about this problem when all those “kids” joined up to lop Christian heads in Iraq and Syria.
That's not to say that there aren't SOME jobs that women can do in the military, but there are very few jobs that they can do better than men. And if you don't believe they're trying to lower standards so that women can meet the criteria, you haven't been paying attention.
Men and women are different. They're built for different purposes. It's not a knock on women to point out that they aren't made for combat, it's just an acknowledgement of fact. This push to put more women in more roles in the military is political correctness run amok, it's BS, and it's going to get people killed. Women need to stop trying to be men.
