Jim Harbaugh ended the 49ers' eight-year playoff drought in his first season. In year two, San Francisco made its first Super Bowl appearance since 1994. Despite his success, any warm feelings between the head coach and his players went away quickly.
"He does a great job of giving you that spark, that initial boom," 49ers offensive lineman Alex Boone says on an upcoming episode of HBO's "Real Sports With Bryant Gumble," according to ProFootballTalk. "But after a while, you just want to kick his.... He just keeps pushing you, and you're like, 'Dude, we got over the mountain. Stop. Let go.' He kind of wore out his welcome."
Harbaugh himself didn't deny his tendency to wear on people.
"They just don't want to be around you after a while," he said.
Harbaugh and the 49ers parted ways after his fourth season, the first in which San Francisco failed to reach the playoffs with an 8-8 record, though he was already rumored to be on the hot seat before the regular season began because of his overbearing style.
"I think he just pushed guys too far," Boone said. "He wanted too much, demanded too much, expected too much. You know, 'We gotta go out and do this. We gotta go out and do this. We gotta go out and do this.' And you'd be like, 'This guy might be clinically insane. He's crazy.'
"I think that if you're stuck in your ways enough, eventually people are just going to say, 'Listen, we just cant work with this.'"
After his separation from the 49ers, Harbaugh was quickly picked up by his alma mater, the University of Michigan. For now, the two appear to be enjoying the honeymoon period, though it might be brief.

Of course The Pats organization usually fills its roster with players who have a team first mentality (with someone like Aaron Hernandez being the exception). ...
Yeah, well, the Big Ten equivalent of Nick Saban has just come to Michigan, so Urban will be hitting the Prilosec soon enough. Go Blue!
I'm sure they will do better — Anything less and the fans will demonstrate their displeasure through ticket sales.
It all works out.
Reason number 49 why the NFL sucks.
Or Bear Bryant, he d*mmed nearly killed the guys at A & M.
Suburban seemed to do OK vs. Nick back in January as I remember. But that does need to become a rivalry game again.
Yeah, but Nick took away Urban’s SEC dominance and he couldn’t handle that.
Just as Harbaugh will take away his dominance of the Big Ten.
that is EXACTLY correct
he is the perfect college coach.
Im a Purdue fan, ditto.
allow me to express my most sincere and heartfelt condolences...
My daughter is a grad, I love the place.
Just as Harbaugh will take away his dominance of the Big Ten.
remains to be seen...i wouldn’t put too much money on it, though...
My daughter is a grad, I love the place.
yes, I’m certain the campus is lovely, though I can’t say from experience...
He was basically a quarterback working under Mike Ditka, who similarly was booted because he had out lived his welcome. I remember many games where Ditka would REAM and I mean REAM bad plays, esp from people like Harbaugh.
I see Harbaugh picking up his winning ways in college.
Here comes his 19th nervous breakdown.....
I was at Purdue for Brees. The upside was we won football games. The downside was that people got the mistaken impression that Tiller was a good football coach. I stopped watching after season two of Tiller’s mini me.
I just couldn’t take another game of THIS repeated every set of downs:
I formation, run up the middle for no gain on first and second followed by either A)I formation, run up the middle for no gain, or B) desperation pass.
Huskers stole the worst coach in the Pac 12. Good Luck.
Pray America is waking
Match that !
Ha, ha. Read between the lines. Harbaugh is a d!ck. He lost the TEAM. You don’t get the most out of your TEAM by being a jerk. But 8-8 is good for some people ,I guess.
Agree, Joe recruited the right guy though.
Ran into Joe one time in a close to campus ice cream shop, he was real down to earth guy. He said “don’t you dare tell my wife how much I ate here today”
