Former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee said Thursday on CNN that he's running for the Democratic nomination for president, just a week after announcing he formed an exploratory committee, his most definitive statement he's made toward formalizing a 2016 campaign.
"Yes, that's why I'm running. Because I feel strong about where we're going as a country," Chafee told CNN's "New Day" on Thursday, when asked why he's been so critical of Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. Chafee was asked by CNN's John Berman in the context of having not formally declared his presidential campaign.
Chafee spokeswoman Debbie Rich said Chafee did not declare himself as a candidate for president Thursday, despite saying "that's why I'm running."
"We are still in the exploratory committee phase," she told CNN in a phone interview, adding, "We will file the proper papers to be an official candidate, but that has not happened yet."
Chafee, a former Republican and former senator, announced he was forming an exploratory committee last week. Chafee's been differentiating himself from fellow Democratic primary contenders by taking sharp jabs at Clinton, willing to be more critical than would-be challengers former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley or former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb over her vote in Congress to authorize the war in Iraq.
"That was a moment where the premise for going to Iraq was so false that there were weapons of mass destruction; she didn't do her homework. We live with the ramifications," Chafee told CNN's "State of the Union" over the weekend. "You may say that's 12 years ago that's a big motivator for me running. If you show a lack of judgment, lack of doing homework then, what can we expect in the future?"

Smart move. If Hillary has to bow out, he is in the mix. The Democrat who wins the primary will become President, no matter what.
Chafee is one of the biggest preening blowhards to ever hold office. Why is it that the real jackasses think they should be president?
Yup..would love that sitting across the table from putin..putin would just ball up in a fetal position../s
Every dollar the Dims spend in their primary is a dollar not spent in the general.
Go Chaffee!
That makes him the perfect Dem candidate.......
He’s hoping to get a bump from the sesquicentennial of Lincoln’s assassination.
Chafee and O’Malley have been told by the Dem hierarchy to go out there and fire away on Hillary and bleed her a little bit till their new chosen one, Fauxahontas, gets her campaign staffing, organization, and money people in place. Hillary’s campaign rollout has been a disaster so far so no doubt the DNC has to be concerned and they’re sharpening their political long knives for her now.
Probably claim he’s a descendent...............
Sounds feasible.............
Hope Biden, O’Malley and others will jump in and the Dems have a series of TV debates where they tear each other apart like the Pubies do. Maybe they will ask Chillary the tough questions the Pubies are too timid to ask her.
“Yes, that’s why I’m running. Because I feel strong about where we’re going as a country,”
Yup, sounds like Chafee, feeling strongly about nothing specific.
This Lincoln Chafee is the living example of straddling, hedging, backfilling and waffling that makes up so much of our (sometimes) elected political class. Not sufficiently doctrinaire to take a position and stick with it, they constantly “evolve”, seeking political favor according to current fashionable opinion, with no moral compass to steer by.
Herself, Madame Benghazi, the Cold & Joyless, has much less moral ambiguity - the morals are chucked once and for all, steer straight for the rocks. It is like watching a destroyer playing chicken with a lighthouse, it cannot end well.
True enough. Hillary got more votes in primary elections vs. Obama, but, he had the advantage in delegates selected in states which did caucuses instead of primaries.
I was surprised when I learned that. Just considering that the Clintons had been through presidential primaries/caucuses before, and had been successful, it was surprising to me that Hillary and her people just didn’t pay attention to the caucuses. They didn’t organize well for the caucuses. I remember that her people were surprised to learn that the state of Texas had both a primary and a caucus to select convention delegates.
I am convinced that there were WMD. The question is "where did they go?"
And, lest old Lincoln get too full of himself, he became a Senator only because his Daddy died in office. He's as much of a "dynasty" politician as the Clintons or Kennedys.
If I were Chafee I’d run too......and keep on running : )
Syria............They agreed to take the WMD's but Saddam had to stay in Iraq..............
That’s what I’ve always believed, too. Syria.
My my AppyPappy, aren’t you pessimistic. I’ll go out on a limb and predict a Republican will win the election. I hope it’s Ted Cruz.
