George Will challenges Ted Cruz’s ‘theory’ for running
The Washington Times ^ | April 2, 2015 | Seth McLaughlin

Conservative columnist George Will says that Sen. Ted Cruz’s theory for running for the White House — that he can get “more votes from traditional Republican constituencies” — was “slain” by the outcome of the 1964 presidential race and simply doesn’t add up.

“The 1964 theory was that many millions of conservatives abstained from voting because the GOP did not nominate sufficiently deep-dyed conservatives,” Mr. Will wrote this week in The Washington Post. “So if in 1964 the party would choose someone like Arizona Barry Goldwater, hitherto dormant conservatives would join the electorate in numbers sufficient for victory.”

Mr. Will said the theory was “slain by a fact — actually 15,951,378 facts.”

“That was the difference between 43,129,566 votes President Lyndon Johnson received and the 27,178,188 that Goldwater got on the way to winning six states,” he said.

Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, announced his candidacy last week at Liberty University, which bills itself as the world’s largest Christian university.

On Thursday, the Cruz camp issued a press release touting how it has raised $4 million in the eight days since the announcement....

Shut up, George. The electorate is far different than it was fifty years ago. And we were never menaced by the likes of what we're seeing today.

The words Conservative and George Will should not appear adjacent to each other.

I don’t know if he was ever anything but an establishment hack , but he sure hasn’t been a Conservative for at least 15 years

Wake up kids

Reagan might have lost to LBJ

The election was 11 Months after JFK got shot on national TV in the most conservative state in the country in hostile Hunt country where speculation abounded

The GOP candidate whoever it might have been

Was taken out metaphorically by the same 6.5 caranco as Jack Kennedy

Goldwater was a poor orator and media hated him though it was a bit less loony left than now

Now is pretty much off the charts

On this point, I would invoke the so-called "Buckley Rule" (named for the late William F. Buckley Jr.): One would do well to support the rightmost candidate who has a serious chance of winning...

Buckley was a smart individual. Therefore, I would think it likely that he would be horrified by how "his" rule was being used to justify stupid and counterproductive voting habits.

Give it up, George. You will not succeed in getting the Act of Love Jeb, nor the Walk back Walker as our nominee. What is this thing you have against Cruz!

The Republican RINO “Torpedo Cruz” initiative has begun. They want Bush or Walker to win.

Cruz has proven he is a threat.

Go Ted, you are over the target now and the flack will get thicker.

None of this is going to stick to Ted Cruz.Cruz will turn out democrats to vote for him.

As of late, George Will's greatest Establishment achievement seems to be sitting in front of a camera and looking like he hasn't taken a satisfying crap since Bush the Elder's inaugural!!!!

So. In another concoction of “can’t win” theorems, Will drags back 50+ years (half a century) to explain why Cruz can’t win. Seems like the 80s didn’t even happen. Like RR didn’t excite and ignite a return to sanity.

Will and all the other loyal but-not-too-vocal so-called conservative pundits sit there week after week on TV and in their columns talking about Obama as a rightful President with honest differences just doing a bad job of it. Yet it always comes down to the amount of time and trouble they spend on telling conservatives how they can’t win and how moderation should be the watchword....blah blah blah.

They have NO idea whatsoever about what life is like in this country for real American citizens - what they do, how they feel or how they’ll vote with the right man for the job. A bunch of DC ass-sitters and blowhards.

I went to the YAF convention with Dick Allen to draft Goldwater.

Bill Moyers created the daisy-plucking girl--but it was Moyers' LBJ who created the Tonkin Gulf nothingburger/decade-of-political-ROE/meddling which crashed the nation's spirit.

George Will went to dinner with candidate Obama and toasted him with Kool-Aid.

Now it's time for the pompous pantywaist to drink a big glass of STFU.

The adults are here to clean up the mess.

The vitriol that was directed at Goldwater by the usual suspects just as nasty as anything thrown at conservatives today. The media, of course, was 100% allied against him as was the entertainment industry. Add the fact that LBJ got a lot of sympathy votes from the assassination of JFK, and you had the makings of a landslide.

At that time even with Kennedy's death, America was at the peak of its world power and dominance of economics. Many people, mostly lib economists, thought we could spend our way to Utopia. Goldwater said we couldn't. He was right.

“Mr. Will, though, said in his column that there is no need to nominate a conservative firebrand like Mr. Cruz, given how much the party has moved to the right over the years.”

Where have they “moved to the right”? Certainly NOT in the people they’ve nominated to be president: Bush Sr., Dole, and Bush Jr. were all MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVE than McCain or Romney. Dole single-handedly stopped Hillary care. Bush Sr. put Thomas on the Court, Bush Jr. put Alito and Roberts on the Court. I couldn’t imagine Romney/McCain putting anyone more conservative than another SandyD on the court.

Policy wise there was an outcry for a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage in the 1990s - don’t hear a peep about it now. Republicans in the Senate carried the way for Amnesty in 2013 and it nearly became law...7 years earlier they FOUGHT THEIR OWN PRESIDENT against it.

The Democrat Party, on the other hand has clearly moved FAR LEFT. That cannot be argued. They are masking it by saying it’s the Republicans that have moved right, and Will, LIKE A TOTAL IDIOT, has taken the bait.

Yo, George, subsequent to 1964 the only conservative candidate to appear on the ballot won TWO LANDSLIDE presidential elections.
