It was just over 60 years ago that the tactics of Senator Joseph McCarthy were repudiated when he was censured by the Senate in December 1954. Ever since then, McCarthyism the reckless hurling of accusations at adversaries so as to destroy their reputations has been considered one of the lowest forms of political behavior and one liberals love to crusade against.
But McCarthyism isnt limited to one party or ideology. And if liberals have any sense of self-awareness they will recognize the tactic has returned and is growing in their back yard.
Harry Reid, the top Democrat in the Senate, was asked by CNNs Dana Bash this week if he regretted his 2012 accusation on the Senate floor that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney hasnt paid taxes for ten years. Reid presented no evidence at the time and claimed he didnt need any: I dont think the burden should be on me. The burden should be on him. Hes the one Ive alleged has not paid any taxes.
Reids response in the interview was fascinating. When asked by Bash if his tactic was McCarthyite he visibly shrugged on camera, smiled, and said Well, they can call it whatever they want. Romney didnt win, did he? White House spokesman Josh Earnest refused to criticize Reid for his comment because it was three years old, when in reality Reids televised reveling in it was only three days old.

The liberals are about to get their comeuppance just watch.
The Communist “Daily Worker” created the term mccarthyism to smear Sen. McCarthy. I wish that people would not use it — especially National Review. Ayn Rand says that naming an ideology after a person is a statist concept.
The Democrats are all hanging their heads in shame now that Harry Reid has been proven to be a liar.
Hahahahahahaha!
What is even funnier, is the Democrats think that Reid won’t lie to them.
Hahahahahahaha!
Of course, McCarthy was shown to be substantially correct in his allegations by the Venona papers.
Reid is a vile corrupt POS. Then again he is a Democrat so the description is self evident.
I just released the much updated fifth edition of “Harry: Money Mob and Influence”. It is the most comprehensive overview of Reid corruption anywhere. Unfortunately, I was blackballed or ignored by everyone, including John Fund, for years.
2)It isn't "McCarthyism" unless it's "reactionary."
There is a single word now missing in politics. Especially Federal politics. A word the founders used in darn near every document they created.
H O N O R
Ahh YES. Someone tell Fund that ‘McCarthyism’ isn’t the correct term.
How will we ever get out of this mess when no one emphasizes the facts!???
I think Fund should read “Blacklisted by History” by Stanton Evans - Then he would stop using the Macarthyism term.
It is really upsetting when so call conservatives would use that term. History has proved that McCarthy was right.
Eggactly!
“McCarthyites”? Please, use the term “Stalinists” for these guys. McCarthy, a true patriot, doesn’t deserve to be associated with those jerks.
