The co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525 appears to have deliberately crashed the plane after he was left alone in the cockpit, according to a French prosecutor.
The captain was intentionally locked outside minutes before the A320 crashed into an alpine mountain ridge, French Prosecutor Brice Robin said Thursday. Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, a 28-year-old German national, was silent throughout the plane’s descent and was alive at the point of impact, according to the prosecutor.
Mr. Robin’s conclusions are drawn from the plane’s cockpit voice recorder, recovered at the crash site in the French Alps late Tuesday and analyzed by French accident investigators on Wednesday.
The recording contains screams believed to be from passengers, once they recognized the plane was crashing.
Investigators are now exploring why Flight 9525 went into its unauthorized descent from its 38,000-foot cruising altitude with one crew member absent. The descent led to the crash about 10 minutes later.
French air accident investigators said on Wednesday they extracted information from the jet’s cockpit voice recorder. The recording contained voices and other sounds, said Rémi Jouty, director of France’s aviation accident investigation office, which is leading the probe. He added that there was no explanation yet for why the plane went down.
Germanwings, the low-fare unit of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, hasn’t disclosed the identity of the pilots....

You're right. I just saw a video to that effect. It looks like there is an override button in the cockpit that could shut off the door override procedure.

Well, regardless of his flight hours, it wasn’t incompetence apparently. I doubt it was a health issue also as he was young (28) and you’d expect to hear something (gasping, moaning, etc).
We may never know this guy’s problem. Obviously, deranged and suicidal. Maybe he wanted his 15 minutes of fame? Every now and then someone just goes batsh!t crazy....it happens.

But why into a mountain..it would have been easy for him to auger into Nice, or Monaco...and do far more damage...also, in the two other instances of pilots pulling a kamikaze..one in Indonesia, and the other the Egypt Air flight..they both put the planes into steep, near vertical dives..not this controlled descent. It’s curious at best

I guess I will have to add that to my other 2 possibilities. I think mechanical problems are ruled out for sure now.

Looks like they are training people to do this type of thing. Probably what happened to that other missing airliner from last year.
Raises the question if it was due to a passenger(s) on board.

First thought is Islamic terrorism. Perhaps something will be found out on his computer or phone records to prove this.
Another thought is unrequited love.
Sounds like standard procedure is to have a flight attendant go into the cockpit when the pilot leaves so the co-pilot can stay seated at the controls.
The FA can then open the cockpit door on the pilot’s return.
What if Lubitz killed the FA, and decided to crash the plane because of his crime. Maybe he had a thing for the FA and had been rejected—who knows.
The whole thing about him breathing steadily while pandemonium reigns outside the door shows a person who has decided upon a specific course of action.
The only question is why.
There is more than is being released right now.

German police have been deployed outside Andreas Lubitz’s home in Montabaur, in west Germany.
German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere says there are no indications that the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, had “any kind of terrorist background”, the Reuters news agency reports.
Very close to BK. I covered it and a number of other installations when I was a family life chaplain.
