Could Mayor Rahm Emanuel be thinking about renaming Chicagos airports, perhaps after President Barack Obama?
Emanuel brought up the airports' names during a candidate forum Wednesday night at Chicago State University.
The topic came up as the mayor fielded a question on why he quickly proposed, then abandoned efforts to name a new North Side high school after Obama and the South Sides Stony Island Parkway after the late Arthur Brazier, a revered African-American civic leader who founded the Woodlawn Organization and was pastor of the Apostolic Church of God for 48 years.
"We have to, in some way, whether its President Obama or in the other case, Dr. Brazier, acknowledge people who have done significant things. We have an airport, two of them, named after, you know, Midway Airport, OHare Airport, Emanuel said. These are people who have been transformative in the city of Chicago. But we have airports named after battleships.
Actually, OHare is named after World War II Navy pilot Edward Butch OHare, and Midway was given its name by city officials in 1949 in remembrance of the 1942 Battle of Midway, a crucial battle in the Pacific during World War II.
Emanuel did not take questions from reporters following the forum. Update: Later, Emanuel spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said the mayor has no plans to rename either airport.
The mayor gave his answer in acknowledging he erred in seeking to name a North Side high school after the president, when Obama got his start in politics on the South Side......

".....On Wednesday morning, Chicago State had issued a press release informing the public that the long-planned forum with Emanuel and mayoral challenger Jesus Chuy Garcia was to be held without the mayors previously confirmed participation.
In an effort to give both students and voters in neighboring communities an opportunity to have their voices heard in the electoral process, CSU invited both Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Commissioner Jesus Chuy Garcia to a Mayoral Forum. Commissioner Garcia has agreed to participate, however, we were recently informed that Mayor Emanuel has chosen not to attend the forum, the university said.
On behalf of the CSU community, we feel Mayor Emanuel is missing an important opportunity to address the needs and concerns of a community that is often underrepresented and underserved, the university added.
The morning announcement led to the issue being hotly debated on black-owned radio station WVON, where callers and talk-show hosts expressed outrage, characterizing the alleged pull-out as a show of disrespect to the black community....
And by early afternoon, Chicago State issued a new press release announcing a change of events.
Chicago State University is pleased to announce that both mayoral candidates will be in attendance for a candidate forum tonight, the new statement read. We are very thankful to both Mayor Emanuel and Commissioner Garcia for making themselves available to the students and community members of CSU......"
Reached later, CSU Professor Kelly Harris sheepishly admitted he never received written confirmation from the Emanuel campaign, but said he was led to believe he had a commitment after the campaigns initial email expressing interest, and subsequent phone conversations with the campaign negotiating changes to the format.
Regardless, Emanuel was not going to allow stand a false impression that he had pulled out of a black community event, Mayberry said."........
Obama International Airport.
Where chickens come home to roost.
Maybe Rahm can name the Chicago Municipal Sewer System after Obama. They are both full of crap.
They could put a hammer and sickle on top.
If you like your flight, you can keep your flight.
we are SO frikkin’ CONTAMINATED
From being named after a Hero
to being named after a Zero....
The first thing they’ll do is remove the metal detectors.
Although the phrase “flying INTO Obama” does have some appeal, NO, NO, A THOUSAND TIMES NO!
Oh for the love of Pete!
Flying in to Obama? Where many men have gone before!
Where, if you like your aircraft, you can keep your aircraft...
If you think about it, it’s a perfect name for a Chicago airport. Re-naming O’Hare pays homage to a truly sleazey president and throws mud in the face of a Medal of Honor awardee.
Rename both airports after Obama? Sounds like something a lib would do. Sure glad hizzhonor solved all of the important things like that murder problem.
Please keep this in mind throughout your day - if you remove the vowels from Obama’s last name what do you have left - BM. How appropriate is that! See his name has a purpose because all we have left here in America is CRAP.
Yes, just as naming a street “Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard” is a sure indication it is a bad area, high schools with names like “Malcolm Shabazz” and such are sure indications of single-digit graduation rates (and even those graduates are semi-literate).
Is it by chance on or near MLK drive?

Reminds me of something else I saw “floated” recently.
It would be appropriate to name that after Obama.
