(CNN) - A Germanwings Airbus A320 plane carrying at least 148 people crashed Tuesday in mountainous southeastern France, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls told reporters.
Valls said he fears those aboard the flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Dusseldorf, Germany -- 142 passengers and six crew members -- may be dead.
French President Francois Hollande also said no survivors were expected. The plane crashed near Digne les Bains, in the Alpes de Haute Provence region, Valls said.
"The conditions of the accident are not yet clear but lead us to believe there will be no survivors," Hollande said.
The crash happened at about 10:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m. ET) in mountainous terrain near the village Prads-Haute-Bléone, French police Capt. Benoit Zeisser said.
Because of the terrain, it will be a difficult site for rescuers to access, Zeisser said. A police helicopter is in the area, he said.
The twin-engine Airbus A320s, which entered service in 1988, is generally considered among the most reliable aircraft, aviation analyst David Soucie said.
The crash site would be nearly halfway between Barcelona and Dusseldorf. Crashes mid-flight are rare, as most happen near takeoff or landing, CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo said.

It's weird because it happened in the middle of the flight and because it was a Lufthansa subsidiary's plane (the Germans are pretty conscientious when it comes to maintenance, etc.).
The fact that the crash happened in the mountains makes it less weird because of possible visibility and turbulence issues.
There will be all manner of scrutiny.

The question is.... How far was the vertical stabilizer from the main crash site??

I’m guessing that it is very probable considering the recent threats against France and Germany from the sons of pig f’n dogs.

According to an aviation specialist on AM TV news, it's a very safe area to fly, hundreds of planes pass over a day, and the plane at that point would be at a high enough altitude to avoid turbulence or weather.
Take a look at the map. The plane took off from Barcelona. Barcelona is one of those European cities that's a little too close to the chaos across the Med to not be concerned about security.

Plane took off in calm weather, very few clouds, no wind. Got to normal flight altitude, sent out a mayday then rapidly dropped to a low elevation just before the crash. Planes generally never have issues while at cruising speeds and altitude.

Time to remain cool........this incident does not good, for multiple reasons. We should stand down, and let the Spanish, French & Germans check this out. With these Aviation experts now on scene....the world will soon know what really happened to th German Wings flight.
Prayers for all the passengers lost and their families!!! May the perished folk rest-in-peace, in God’s eternal paradise!!!

I have never understood this: aviation experts always seem to say in emergency situations the priority is for the pilot(s) to first fly the plane...I get it, but can’t they easily describe in the distress call what the plane is doing or not doing instead of just declaring a Mayday or Emergency? It seems that there was quite a bit of time during the planes decent that something of significance could have been communicated by the pilot(s) indicating the problem. This all assumes that the pilot did send out a distress call.

The owner of a campground near the crash site, Pierre Polizzi, said he heard the plane making curious noises shortly before it crashed.
“At 11.30, I heard a series of loud noises in the air. There are often fighter jets flying over, so I thought it sounded just like that. I looked outside, but I couldn’t see any fighter planes,” he told The Associated Press in a phone interview. “The noise I heard was long - like 8 seconds - as if the plane was going more slowly than a military plane. There was another long noise after about 30 seconds.”
Polizzi said the plane crashed about 5-to-8 kilometers (3-to-11 miles) from his place, which is closed for the season.
