Oregon To Be First In Nation To Implement Per-Mile Road Tax Program
The Truth About Cars ^ | 3/9/2015 | Cameron Aubernon

Posted on 03/09/2015 9:39:57 AM PDT by nascarnation

With EVs and other fuel-efficient vehicles saving consumers money at the pump, Oregon will be the first to issue a per-mile road tax to refill its coffers.

Automotive News reports the state will offer two options to its motorists: pay at the pump, or pay a 1.5-cent rate per mile traversed. The latter will be conducted through a device that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD port, then gathers mileage data to determine how much the motorist will pay in tax.

Right now, the program — set to begin July 1 — will be implemented by the Oregon DOT in partnership with Sanef ITS Technologies America and Intelligent Mechatronic Systems, the latter supplying the aforementioned OBD mileage reader.

Up to 5,000 volunteers will participate in the initial program, which will compare the tax paid at the pump to the miles driven. The results will be turned over to ODOT, which will then determine if a motorist is given a refund or an invoice based on said findings.

Oregon won’t be the only one to undergo a road tax program: over 10 other states are either in the process of passing legislation or conducting trials for such programs.

Hope this is a long time coming to Texas. You can’t get into your car here without driving 30 miles one way to the grocery store, to school, to the nearest Walmart, etc. People commute 1-2 hours to work.

Then there’s Alaska where they have to fly to get to the grocery store.

Who would want to volunteer for such a thing?

In Oregon, "volunteer" has a slightly different meaning.

In Colorado they tax your cistern because they say the rain belongs to the state; in Maryland they tax you on the rain runoff from your roof ... says it goes into the drain system they put in. In OR some farmer was fined or something because they said he had a water storage pond. He says it’s a natural depression where rain collects. Have to leave it to Democrats to come up with novel ways of taxing.

Wanna bet that the "partners" contributed some coin to the back pockets of some overlords at the Oregon DOT and some Oregon pols?

Be careful if you have out-of-state plates. Like the guy who died for selling individual cigarettes in New York, people with out-of-state plates in Oregon will be continuously hassled.

All auto insurance companies are in bed with each State’s DMV.

If we get a moving violation or worse, every state notifies our auto insurance companies and our rates go up.

If we don’t get moving violations our rates can go down.

To get better rates if we don’t drive as much, we turn in our mileage each quarter to our insurance company. If you don’t believe that data isn’t shared with the states’s DMV’s, you still believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Great Pumpkin.

Last but not least, if you travel with your smartphone in your vehicle, they know, who you are, where/when you started your trips and where/when you ended your trips. This identification system was recently used on a very busy road connecting two counties to identify regular commuters and visitors and times of travel. We are so brainwashed re the great eco bs, only two letters of complaint hit the local fish wraps after this collective info was published in the local fish wraps.

the state will offer two options to its motorists: pay at the pump, or pay a 1.5-cent rate per mile traversed

So electric car owners will all opt for the pay at the pump option and still avoid paying taxes since they don't use gas pumps. How will this help fill the state's gap caused by EV owners not buying gas?

Yet another reason why I won't be buying a new car...

Bicyclists claim they own the road too.

The laws of physics are correcting them, one by one.

Their folly begets "ghost bikes".

Sounds like a bureaucratic headache to administer this.

...

There is no red tape long enough or red enough for the government. The more complicated it is, the more they like lit.

They are not installing anything on my car, I will go to jail and pay fines before that. And with other Realtors and traveling sales persons, we will not comply. Just like our President, I don’t think this law is fair to people trying to make a living using their car, I think we should be exempt and deem it so!!

Tax for storing rain and tax for letting it run off. They tax us coming and going. In the front door and out the back. Death and taxes.

Reconsider your post again, and then dial in this factor:

Ulterior agenda.

Property tax would be too simple. What they want is the technology.... A technology that affords them their ulterior objective, a means of control

Money's nice, but they don't want just your money. They want you, .... slave.

“Be careful if you have out-of-state plates. Like the guy who died for selling individual cigarettes in New York, people with out-of-state plates in Oregon will be continuously hassled.”

Decades ago my wife and I moved to northern California. I can’t remember the grace period to re licensing your vehicles and getting a new drivers license. However the local CHP guy knew. I got stopped on a Monday going to work after we had moved in. My vehicle was a company car and registered in California. I had an out of state drivers license. I was stopped without violating any law, , and I was escorted to the Local DMV office to take the driving test. I had to take the info back to the local CHP office. Then, I was informed that our two personal vehicles needed to be re licensed and my wife needed a new drivers license. I drove home got her and she drove one vehicle to the DMV, and I drove the other car to the DMV. I registered the cars while she took the test. I asked the DMV people if I had to take the data to the CHP, and they said no.

Decades later on Free Republic, I found that our local postman was probably the trigger guy, and he probably got a bonus for each vehicle and driver not registered in California.

Green "useful idiots", who coincidentally are the ones with electric cars.
