Iran blinds man in 'eye for an eye' justice

On Tuesday, a man convicted of blinding another man in an acid attack was himself forcibly blinded in one eye, according to Amnesty International and Tasnim News, a semi-official news website.

The punishment is believed to be Iran's first case of Qasas, meaning retribution in kind, Tasnim News said.

Amnesty International denounced the sentence.

"This punishment exposes the utter brutality of Iran's justice system and underlines the Iranian authorities' shocking disregard for basic humanity," said Raha Bahreini, Amnesty International's Iran researcher. "Meting out cruel and inhuman retribution punishments is not justice. Blinding, like stoning, amputation and flogging, is a form of corporal punishment prohibited by international law. Such punishments should not be carried out under any circumstances."

The acid attacker had been hired by the victim's wife to throw acid in his face, Tasnim News said. Amnesty International said the attack occurred in 2009 in the city of Qom.

The defendant was blinded in his left eye at Rajai Shahr Prison, but the blinding of his right eye was postponed, Amnesty International said. The man was ordered to pay "blood money" and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

I read this kind of stuff and it is troubling that we are negotiating with people who really are not much better than ISIS. Their punishments are just more institutionalized than IS, yet no one seems to grasp the one thing they have in common is Islamic/sharia law.

I know it seems harsh, but eye for an eye justice is effective. If nothing else, it ensures the punishments fit the crimes. What else should be done with someone who throws acid in another person’s face? Should the criminal be given community service, a light sentence, a slap on the wrist?

Punishments should serve to deter others from doing similar crimes. This is one of the few areas where I agree with Islamic culture. They don’t have a lot of crime for obvious reasons. That doesn’t mean I agree with everything they call criminal, but I surely agree murderers and attempted murders deserve swift and severe punishment.

I have to agree. I’d hate to see someone get their hand chopped off for speeding, but for burglary or armed robbery? Well. My sympathies dwindle.

“What is appropriate for a lying politician?”

That’s a good one.

...I’d hate to see someone get their hand chopped off for speeding...

Reminds me of the cartoon showing an Arab with a huge bandage on his right hand and the other guy saying: "Abdul! Glad to see you won your appeal for those burglary charges!"

And, I bet they didn’t wade thru 12 years of appeals courts before finally administering the punishment.
