Resolution would have banned hanging flags of any nation in the lobby of student government offices
Student leaders at the University of California-Irvine vetoed a resolution on Saturday that would have banned hanging flags of any nation, including America's Stars and Stripes, in the lobby of student government offices, amid widespread criticism from students and alumni.
The Legislative Council of the Associated Students of the University of California, Irvine's passed the resolution, "Flags and decoration adjustment for inclusivity," in a 6-4 vote Tuesday with the stated intention of creating a "more inclusive" environment.
The resolution said "the American flag is commonly flown in government public service locations, military related entities, at homes, in foreign lands where the US government has a presence," and its "symbolism has negative and positive aspects that are interpreted differently by individuals."
Its passage drew widespread opposition from the campus community and beyond for being offensive and unpatriotic.
"As a military veteran, American citizen and taxpayer, I find this piece of 'legislation' highly offensive," a commenter said on the ASUCI 's Facebook student page, in one of the more mildly worded complaints. "This is a public school, supported by taxpayers, (yes, I know, most of you pay tuition, as well, but that does not cover the entire cost), and it is appropriate to display the United States Flag on campus. Please reconsider your actions and rescind this resolution."
Current students also registered their dissatisfaction with the resolution, saying the resolution does not represent the student body as a whole.
"As much as I hope that their decision gets vetoed and that the administration will take some accountability for allowing such a controversial issue to be voted on in the first place, I also hope that people will stop generalizing us and saying that they will refuse to hire UCI students or that the generous donations of our alumni will fall, or even worse that we are not proud Americans. The majority of us would be proud to stand out there and wave the flag ourselves if need be," another commenter said.
The UCI administration issued a statement saying "this misguided decision was not endorsed or supported in any way by the campus leadership, the University of California, or the broader student body."
Student-body President Reza Zomorrodian also publicly opposed the legislation, leading the Executive Cabinet of student government to convene on Saturday to veto the legislation.
"We fundamentally disagree with the actions taken by ASUCI Legislative Council and their passage of R50-70 as counter to the ideals that allow us to operate as an autonomous student government organization with the freedoms of speech and expression associated with it," the executive cabinet said in a statement. "It is these very symbols that represent our constitutional rights that have allowed for our representative creation and our ability to openly debate all ranges of issues and pay tribute to how those liberties were attained."
Is there still hope,without change???
The six students in the legislative council that kicked off this outrage should be expelled. Or at least removed from their positions on that council.
These weak kneed people in California. All they had to do is TAKE THE MONEY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE. I will make a statement that most of these “KIDS” that wants to ban the American flag are all on borrowed money. Take that money from them, and they’ll all scream like stuck hogs and claim that they are all AMERICAN citizens and deserve all that free money. And given another chance, they’ll promise never ever do that again.
“The resolution said “the American flag is commonly flown in government public service locations, military related entities, at homes, in foreign lands where the US government has a presence,”
How does “ a home have government influence”??
Do they mean that the home is a domicile of a military member? A veteran? what?
I agree with the responder that said, ‘pull the plug on the money’.
so six Aholes (or IslamoNazi enemy agents?) can ban the American flag from a major USA university....
and secure international headlines doing it...
???
at least this insult did now get overruled
...goood!
but the anti-American.....and anti-Semitism problems...remain on many college campuses....including UCLA, UCIrvine, UC Berkeley main campus, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and San Francisco State University, among others. Where is the good Governor Brown and what is he doing to clean this FILTH off his state’s taxpayer-supported college campuses?
Next step: vandalism.
I think there were lots of phone calls regarding this matter. I for one think there should a law that if your government funded organization will not fly the flag, then no tax money for that organization.
Ask them if they “support the troops”.
“These weak kneed people in California”.......
No weak kneed people anywhere else?
Or, maybe they should be forced to experience some good old
fashion American style mercy. Take them on a tour of a Vet
hospital or Veterans Home.
Here is what I would do. Tomorrow morning I would put forth a bill called the United States Public Flag Display Act. That’s right, USPFDA or Uspfada to those in Rio Linda.
The act is simple. Any public place or institution that received funding from tax payers must display the US Flag and if other flags are also displayed, the US flag is on top.
Failure to do this results in the loss of Federal funding for a period not less than 5 years.
Straight up or down. Get it to the President’s desk tomorrow afternoon. Bill needs to be half a page.
While nice. I would rather they passed an English only amendment. I think that is even more important and bigger impact on the American People. Of course, neither one will be brought forward from these horrid Senators and House Members. The Governors probably will take the issue up and win.
They should be permanently banned from public education in any U.S. taxpayer supported university.
If they can't acknowledge the principles that Constitutionally are the foundation of the nation, they can go to Cuba, Venezuela, Yemen, or Mayheeco.
Don't let the door hit you on the brain on your way out, Guevarra... freakin' community agitator.
If you are not familiar with UCI, it’s basically a school of nerds. The vast majority are into studying and not into politics, sports, or even partying (Irvine PD takes care of the partying part very quickly).
It takes just a few idiots giving the school a bad name.
Also, about 40% of the students will go back to their native countries after they graduate. UCI is also known as University of Chinese Immigrants here in Irvine.
If you what you say is true, then why aren’t they putting a stop to these idiots? Give me a break. If the rest of the students are just a bunch of nerds, then they are allowing these people to take over their university. Take the money away, and these LOUD MOUTHS would just go away. Then the nerds can go back to their studies
Yep, they are all over the place. Because they are living off the tax payers largesse. So, take the money away from all these university, then let them find a job.
I am for mandatory US Constitution/ Declaration of Independence as a semester course in Freshman year of high school instead of what passes for a history class.
