Report: VA Secretary Lied About Serving in Special Forces
weekly standard ^ | february 23, 2015 | daniel halper

The Veterans Affairs secretary lied about serving in the special forces, a report in the Huffington Post alleges.

"Robert McDonald, the secretary of veterans affairs, wrongly claimed in a videotaped comment earlier this year that he served in special operations forces, the most elite units in the armed forces, when his military service of five years was spent almost entirely with the 82nd Airborne Division during the late 1970s," the report reads.

U.S. special operations forces (SOF) are composed of exhaustively trained and highly capable troops from each military service, including the Green Berets, Army Rangers, Delta Force and Navy SEALs -- but not the 82nd Airborne. They are certified to undertake the most dangerous and delicate missions, including, famously, the killing of Osama bin Laden in May 2011. Special operators are a close-knit community deeply hostile to outsiders who try to claim the coveted mantle of special operations.

To earn a “tab” you go to ranger school.
The “scroll”, however, is a way of life...

So...going to ranger school does not make one “special forces”

Being in one of the 3 combat Ranger Battalions does. There is a huge difference.

For the short time in was in a Rgr Bn (Got hurt really bad on a jump) when the guys that went to Ranger School got back, they had to have all the bad habits that were trained into them in Ranger school trained out of them.

Thank you for your service! My son is a Ranger right now and he tells me that the LRP’s oh that day are still thought of with great respect.

He completed airborne and ranger school. He was not operational in either capacity. That does make him closer than most who buy their berets at a military surplus store.

However, in his own words, he said he was not SOF.

And some maintain a low profile.

My wife's cousin that I got to know pretty well, was a special forces guy but I never knew it until he died and all those old vets showed up.

By the guys I served with when I was in the 82d, among others. Of course there are plenty of others and if you google up the phrase “Jumpin Junkies 82d” you’ll get all sorts of returns.

When you’re father served parachute pay was a significant increase in soldier pay, talk to some of the old timers about it. The school was also very, very rigorous; they had not eliminated standards to accommodate the gals.

One grandfather was a sergeant in the mess hall at Pope AFB, and the other was a sergeant in Psy Ops at Ft. Bragg (and once shook JFK’s hand). I was born and raised in Fayetteville (the major city next to Fort Bragg, for those who don’t know), and I can say that 98% of the people who tell you they were Special Forces are lying. The ones that *are* Special Forces never tell you, and sometimes don’t even tell you that they are in the service. They just tend to disappear right before key moments in history, then say they were on “business travel” after they return.

I went through jump school aas an ROTC Cadet in the summer of 1974. Most fun I had being associated with the U.S. Army.

Went back to college for my senior year and ran everyone out of the gym when the basketball team played pick-up basketball before official practices started. Best conditioning in my life.

Congrats on your Son.

I had the honor to go to the Redcatcher reunion in 2013 at Ft Benning at the current 199th Infantry Hdq.

Was able to watch the current (then) Ranger class complete their first few jumps. So honored to see the new group of guys. My reaction was ‘god these guys are just kids’ forgetting I was 18 when I served with the 199th in Vietnam.
