NBC should fire Brian Williams.
Its not just because the face of its news division has become the trending punch line on social media after his harrowing account of a near-death experience in Iraq was exposed as false. Its not just because his explanation for the discrepancies in fact were simply absurd, or because his apology was more parsed than abject.
Its because he fabricated a story.
This is one line in journalism that must never be crossed, should never be rationalized and can never be mitigated by any sum of years of honorable service in the profession.
*
Williams told his terminally embellished versions of the forced-landing story most notably to David Letterman on the Late Show two years ago, then repeated it on the NBC Nightly News.
I have to treat you with renewed respect, Letterman told Williams after hearing of the quick, hard landing in the desert. Thats a tremendous story.
If only it were true.
It was remarkable disturbing, actually that none of his NBC colleagues who were also on the helicopter intervened to stop the false narrative. Had they done so, and if Williams had listened, he and a proud networks news division the top-rated evening newscast in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic would have been spared their current agony.
*
Regrettably, the damage does not end at NBC.
*
What would be newsworthy would be if a journalist fabricated a story and kept his job.
*
NBC needs to do the right thing, for its sake and ours.

if they don’t it means they approve/endorse what he’s done.
Bur Brian makes people feel good about themselves, and that makes NBC money.
Better to quit lying about what his job is and keep him on.
Brian can take Obama with him if the standards apply equally.
His persona is essential to the "cause", donchaknow.
NBC should fire Brian Williams or admit that its programing is just a “Talk Show” and not in any form a “NEWS” program.
Oh, dear, Brian Williams has shown the MSM as willful liars who embellish their deeds and stories? The ultimate sin is to get caught. Brian sinned and was caught. Brian must be destroyed to preserve the credibility of the rest of the lying Media whores. Good luck, Brian, the Media’s long knives are out to get you.
Bring on the next fabulous fabulist!
All the reasons stated above to fire him also apply the POS in WH!
I see no reason they should fire Williams. They commonly employ people of a much lower caliber (AKA Sharpton, etc.).
Why NBC must fire Brian Williams... but won’t. That’s the reality.
Liberal scum, supports liberal scum.
Williams was on tonight heralding that NBC
endorses his lies, endorses his lying coverup,
and like the “exploding cars”, endorses lie
after lie after lie after lie.
The NJ Radio station kept reporting this as a story about “Monmouth County native” Brian Williams, getting that local news angle in.
But I felt he’d really had it when I heard one of the Sirius music deejays talking about it, and it wasn’t even one of the star deejays, just the guy spinning platters on 60s on 6 or 70s on 7 or whatever one it was.
He said: it’s going to be a long time before anyone believes Brian Williams again...the apology only made things worse
And then it was on to the next oldie!
i hope they keep him
“Williams was on tonight heralding that NBC
endorses his lies, endorses his lying coverup,
and like the exploding cars, endorses lie
after lie after lie after lie.”
Once the credibility is gone,it’s gone.
For all practical purposes his career is over even if he’s still cashing the big paychecks.
.
.
NBC is the enemy, and keeping Williams only reduces their credibility and power. At this point he does NBC more harm than good.
During WW2, the allies stopped trying to take out Hitler in 1943 because he was actually hurting Germany’s war effort.
NBC is just a thinly disguised arm of MSNBC.
Rush said that officials at NBC news knew it was fabricated and had asked him to stop telling the story.
Now his Katrina reporting is coming under question.
I can’t believe anything the man says!
