(NEWSER) Houston native Yasmin Eleby vowed that she'd marry herself if she hadn't found true love by 40. And for her 40th birthday, that's exactly what she did. The well-traveled businesswoman who works overseas in the oil industry organized an elaborate wedding, reports the Houston Chronicle, which included 10 bridesmaids and was officiated by her minister sister. (It was a spiritual service, as it is not legal to marry oneself.) Eleby's mother walked her down the aisle, and Eleby sang R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly," which includes the line, "Now I know the meaning of true love."
"I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life," Eleby wrote on Facebook. She held the ceremony at the Houston Museum of African American Culture, reports People; the venue CEO says Eleby is "attractive, she works hard, and she's worldwide," adding that "she's now indicated to others that she has high standards." Eleby has planned a multi-country honeymoon, including stops in Cambodia, Laos, and a jazz festival in Dubai. (In other wedding news, one couple recently tied the knot in their 4-year-old son's hospital room.)

“this situation is so absurd that there actually isnt a law against it.”........
Odumbo and the SCOTUS will certainly have to look into this one.

Well, that explains it. An unattractive black woman who probably considers anyone who might be interested in her, to be beneath her.

My first reaction was that this is utter narcissism on display. My second was more tempered. Thinking about this women I see someone who is educated, successful career-wise, well traveled, financially independent, and with high standards when it comes to men. What has she wanted? A good marriage, and I assume, children. She wants the "happily ever after" that most women want. But at 40 she realizes that her dreams are unlikely to come true. And to top it off, she is a Black female. The pool of educated Black males is substantially smaller than Black females. (Statistically, twice as many black women as black men graduate from college each year.) And college educated black males are less likely marry than college educated males from other races. Black females are twice as likely to never marry as compared with every other group. So, by age 40 the odds of an educated Black women marrying an educated Black male are pretty slim. This woman is facing that fact, but she still wants the wedding. She wants the dress. She wants to be the bride. She wants the celebration that she will not get to enjoy. But she does it anyway. She is making a statement that she is going to enjoy her life even though it did not turn out exactly as she had hoped. She is a strong woman and will do fine on her own. Her family and friends are celebrating with her. I wish her well.
