As noted by the Associated Press, Michelle Obama did not wear a headscarf or veil Tuesday. In Saudi Arabia, that's unusual: The country is one of the few on Earth where women are expected to cover their heads, and most Saudi women wear niqabs.
Exceptions are made for foreigners, however, and Michelle who did wear loose clothing that fully covered her arms appears to have been one of them. In photographs from the official events, other foreign female guests are also shown not wearing headscarves.
More than 1,500 tweets using the hashtag #ميشيل_أوباما_سفور (roughly, #Michelle_Obama_immodesty) were sent Tuesday, many of which criticized the first lady. Some users pointed out that on a recent trip to Indonesia, Michelle had worn a headscarf. Why not in Saudi Arabia?

I may have to agree with her on this one. I’m not in favor of Americans kowtowing to foreign countries. .... particularly when they don’t respect our customs.
One of the few times I feel empathy for her.
I’m with you Morgana. First time I’m proud of my First Lady.
Reference intended.
Criticize the president for bowing to King Abdulla in 2009, or criticize the first lady for not wearing the najib, but pick one. Can't have it both ways.
At least they’re smiling at the classy one.
Why didn’t she just stay home and play basketball?
Evidently, the Saudis thought Moochelle was Patrick Ewing.
There's an old saying that he should have heeded: "Let the wookie win!"
I don’t like Barry or Mooshelle but I am with her on this one. I would tell the whole bunch in the Middle East to take that head scarf and shove it where the sun don’t shine. And If they didn’t like it, Tough!
I guess they can tell the difference between a Lady and a Hootchie mama. LOL
Shouldn’t they have stoned her?
They seem to enjoy Mrs. Bush’ company...Perhaps the disapproval has more to do with attitude than lack of head covering.
But she would not feel so all alone....
Men have to wear scarfs??
Some Christian churches still require or encourage a woman’s hair to be “covered” during services. Black churches especially seem to be fond of the “church hat” phenomenon.
It is polite to try and observe local sensibilities when one is a guest in someone else’s country. When a president and his wife visit the Vatican and meet the Pope it seems to be the protocol there to wear a light scarf head cover. I think I recall Mrs. Reagan and Laura Bush wearing one when their husbands met with JPII. So on a visit to the KSA a woman donning head scarf is simple politeness. Even a low class Chicago frump ought to know better. That being said, in Michelle’s case and for the sake of everybody’s eyes a full burka would have been even better.
