~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas
Little Rock Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located approximately 17 miles northeast of Little Rock, Arkansas.
The host unit at Little Rock AFB is the 19th Airlift Wing (19 AW), assigned to the Air Mobility Command 21st Expeditionary Mobility Task Force. The wing provides the Department of Defense the largest C-130 Hercules transport fleet in the world, supplying humanitarian airlift relief to victims of disasters, to airdropping supplies and troops into the heart of contingency operations in hostile areas.
Little Rock AFB is the only C-130 training base for the Department of Defense, training C-130 pilots, navigators, flight engineers, and loadmasters from all branches of the US military as well as 28 allied nations, in tactical airlift and aerial delivery. It is home to C-130E, C-130H and C-130J aircraft, as well as the C-130 Center of Excellence (i.e., schools for C-130E/H and C-130J crews).
The base is populated by over 6,000 military personnel and another 2,000 civilians. The 19th Airlift Wing (19 AW) of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) is the host wing, having assumed that role from the 314th Airlift Wing (314 AW) of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) on October 1, 2008.

With the assumption of operational control by the 19 AW and AMC, the 314 AW became a tenant unit. Other organizations at Little Rock AFB include AMC's 19th Airlift Group, the 189th Airlift Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard, and the U.S. Air Force Mobility Weapons School. All four of these organizations fly the C-130 Hercules.
The host unit at Little Rock AFB is the 314th Airlift Wing. The 314th AW is responsible for airlifting supplies and people throughout the world and provides a major part of the "Global Power" leg of the Air Force's promise: Global Reach - Global Power for America. With a dual mission, worldwide aerial delivery and C-130 aircrew training, the wing organizes, equips and trains combat-ready airlift units to operate anywhere in the world. Learn More About Little Rock Air Force Base HERE! The MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History was created to interpret Arkansas's military heritage from its territorial period to the present.
Located in the historic Tower Building of the Little Rock Arsenal--the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur--the museum preserves the contributions of Arkansas men and women who served in the armed forces.

The Hand Of God
When NASA began using a new kind of space telescope to capture different spectrums of light, researchers were surprised at one of the photos. It shows what looks like fingers, a thumb, and an open palm showered with spectacular colors of blue, purple, green, and gold. Some have called it The Hand of God.
The idea of God reaching out His hand to help us in our time of need is a central theme of Scripture. In Psalm 63 we read: Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me (vv.7-8). The psalmist felt Gods divine help like a hand of support. Some Bible teachers believe that King David wrote this psalm in the wilderness of Judah during the terrible time of his son Absaloms rebellion. Absalom had conspired to dethrone his father, and David fled to the wilderness (2 Sam. 1516). Even during this difficult time, God was present and David trusted in Him. He said, Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You (Ps. 63:3).
Life can be painful at times, yet God offers His comforting hand in the midst of it. We are not beyond His reach.
Beneath His watchful eye
His saints securely dwell;
That hand which bears all nature up
Shall guard His children well. Doddridge
God bears the worlds weight on His shoulder, yet holds His children in the palm of His hand.
: The superscription to this psalm indicates that David was a refugee in the wilderness when he wrote it, either at the time when he was fleeing from Saul (1 Sam. 23:14-15; 24:1) or fleeing from his own son Absalom (2 Sam. 15:14,23,28). Because David addresses himself as king (Ps. 63:11), some Bible teachers believe that he was fleeing from his son. His life in danger (vv.9-10), David sought out and trusted God for protection and safety (vv.1-2). Instead of allowing his troubles to overwhelm him, David sang of Gods lovingkindness (v.3), meditated on His presence (v.6), and rejoiced in His deliverance (vv.9-11).

IF YOU’VE EVER WONDERED..C130 at gate of LRAFB
THE C-130 ON DISPLAY AT THE FRONT GATE OF LITTLE ROCK AFB, ARKANSAS
This C-130A Hercules was the 126th built by Lockheed Aircraft corp. of Marietta, Georgia. It was accepted into the Air Force inventory on 23 August 1957.
On 2 November 1972, it was given to the South Vietnamese Air Force as part of the Military Assistance Program. A few years later, the aircraft would be involved in a historic flight.
On 29 April 1975, this Herk was the last out of Vietnam during the fall of Saigon. With over 100 aircraft destroyed on the flight line at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, some of them still burning, it was the last flyable C-130 remaining. In a very panicked state, hundreds of people were rushing to get aboard, as the aircraft represented a final ticket to freedom.
People hurriedly crowded into the Herk, packing in tighter and tighter. Eventually, the loadmaster informed the pilot, Major Phuong, a South Vietnamese instructor pilot, that he could not get the rear ramp closed due to the number of people standing on it. In a moment of inspiration, Major Phuong slowly taxied forward, then hit the brakes. The loadmaster called forward again stating he had successfully got the doors closed.
In all, 452 people were on board, including a staggering 32 in the cockpit alone. Using a conservative estimate of 100 pounds per person, it translated into an overload of at least 10,000 pounds. Consequently, the Herk used every bit of the runway and overrun before it was able to get airborne.
The target was Thailand, which should have been 1:20 in flight time, but after an hour and a half, the aircraft was over the Gulf of Slam, and they were clearly lost. Finally, a map was located, they identified some terrain features, and they were able to navigate. They landed at Utapao, Thailand after a three and a half hour flight.
Ground personnel were shocked at what “fell out” as they opened the doors. It was clear that a longer flight would almost certainly have resulted in a loss of life. In the end, however, all 452 people made it to freedom aboard this historic C-130.
Upon landing, the aircraft was reclaimed by the United States Air Force and assigned to two different Air National Guard units for the next 14 years.
On 28 June 1989, it made its final flight to Little Rock Air Force Base and placed on permanent display.

I have driven by Little Rock many times. I almost always saw C-130s flying around.
I was surprised to learn the base was NE of the city as it seemed like I always saw them South of Little Rock. Maybe my memory is just getting bad.
I just realized that I have not heard an AC-130 flying around at dusk in a long time. Not sure the reason but I used to hear them almost nightly. They were flying out of Hurlburt.

Good evening, Ma.
Cold, cold, cold! We had a snow fall this afternoon, it did not reach the big fall which was forecast, however we got about 2 inches, (I am guessing.) Daughter said the driving was horrible, I was glad to see her arrive home safely.
