NFL finds Patriots used underinflated footballs
Boston Globe ^ | 1-21-15 | Ben Volin

Posted on 01/21/2015 6:57:45 AM PST by Colehill1999

The Patriots used underinflated footballs on Sunday night.

The next question is how did it happen?

According to a National Football League letter about the investigation into the controversy that was shared with the Globe, the Patriots were informed that the league’s initial findings indicated that the game balls did not meet specifications. The league inspected each of the Patriots’ 12 game balls twice at halftime, using different pressure gauges, and found footballs that were not properly inflated.

According to ESPN, 11 of the 12 game balls were found to be underinflated by about 2 pounds each. The NFL specifications say they must be inflated to 12½ to 13½ pounds.

Oh, I agree.

Again, there will be “NEPatriot-centric” arguments made to your calculus (for the record, I am BSChem in the NatGas industry).
In the end...the Colts, with their newbie QB, got spanked by a seasoned NFL team that had a clear goal. All other arguments are just so much “whine”.

I say this as a die-hard, life-long Detroit Lions fan.

"I found NOTHING regarding penalties nor if the 12 1/2 - 13 1/2 rule was mandated or advisory"

Herein lies your problem...

From the rulebook you, yourself, just posted...

"...The ball shall be made up of an inflated (12 1/2 to 13 1/2 pounds) urethane bladder enclosed in a pebble grained..."

"shall be" is lawyer speak for mandatory.

Face the facts, it doesn't matter whether they won or lost or by how many points. The Patriots and their asterisk-laden coach's intent was to cheat the rules in order to gain an advantage and ultimately win the game.... AGAIN! And you, taking a cue from the MSM, know it yet choose to ignore it or make up any excuse for it because you are an invested loyal supporter.

You just happened to find yourself on the wrong side of right vs. wrong today. It happens.

The Patriots led, 17-7, at intermission, and outscored the Colts, 28-0, after the officials seemingly corrected the ball issue.

So the argument falls flat at this point. The 2nd half was a blow out

IF the footballs were re-checked at the end of the game.

It is only a few minutes before the game starts, when the teams get their footballs back from the refs, after the refs have checked the air pressure with a gauge on all the balls.

Thus, the air was let out of the Pats footballs after that.

Why couldn't the Pats do it again after the getting the footballs back for the second half?

Nice. Haven't seen that in print yet. But they're definitely a good source.

The NFL should fine the Patriots $1M, suspend Belichek for a year, take away three draft picks, and appoint Michael Sam to inspect the pressure in Tom Brady’s balls after every first down.

Give the Colts NE’s first two picks in this years draft and let BB watch the game from home.

:: Belichek cheats?...He got caught ::

And what kind of penalty will Goodell extract from the Pats before the SB? It is to laugh.

Belichek’s been caught before (not just once, mind you). Isn’t he still serving at the pleasure of his team’s owner (Kraft)...who answers to the NFL Competition Committee that is chaired by...one...Roger Goodell?

Oh, and that owner name...Kraft...hmmmm...isn’t that a name synonymous with American foodstuffs and other capitalist brands that advertise on NFL broadcasts?

Looks like a short road with no turn-offs to me.

The whole “haven’t won an SB since cheatergate” thing is kind of destroyed by the fact that they went 18-1 that year. Really if it wasn’t for running into a Giants team that found ways to gut out 2 improbable wins largely on one major play each the Pats are 5-0 in the SB and finish that season 19-0. If they couldn’t find a way to cheat under the NFL’s watchful eye how did they rattle off 17 straight wins with an average margin of victory over 20? Maybe they were just that damn good.

You are quite likely right, and this is a valid if legalistic defense. If the Patriots inflated the balls to the minimum allowable pressure in a warm room and then took them outside early enough to cool off before the game, the balls would end up about 2 psi below the designated pressure.

The balls were about 15% defeated. 2 psi low for 13 psi ball. Because temp and pressure are proportional, that would equate to a 40 degree celsius drop in temperature or 72 degrees F. The T in the ideal gas law is based off of the Kelvin scale.

Yeah. I picked up on that. Also saw the “problem” was solved at halftime. The New England Cheaters still blew them away.

After all is said and done - the better team won.

In all of this back-and-forth, I probably should have said that from the git-go!
