Mummy Mask May Reveal Oldest Known Gospel

A text that may be the oldest copy of a gospel known to exist — a fragment of the Gospel of Mark that was written during the first century, before the year 90 — is set to be published.

At present, the oldest surviving copies of the gospel texts date to the second century (the years 101 to 200).

This first-century gospel fragment was written on a sheet of papyrus that was later reused to create a mask that was worn by a mummy. Although the mummies of Egyptian pharaohs wore masks made of gold, ordinary people had to settle for masks made out of papyrus (or linen), paint and glue. Given how expensive papyrus was, people often had to reuse sheets that already had writing on them.

They didn’t have any, ducts weren’t invented yet, so no duct tape.

That didn't stop Fred & Wilma Flintstone from celebrating Christmas; just because Christ wasn't born yet!

The title of this thread leads me to believe the comments are not going to be what they’re quacked up to be.

Then he would have had the scroll be buried with him intact, instead of a fragment used in a paper mache mask.

As with all fragments; only a True man of GOD can fill in the blanks...

Given the expense of paper, a fragment might be all he or his family could afford.

One thing that I find interesting about this is that it pushes even further back the dating of the Gospels. I remember years ago reading that “the experts” said the Gospels were not written down until the mid second century at the earliest.

And he probably would not have opted for mummification.

If it looks like a duck, and walks like an Egyptian, it’s an Egyptian duck!
