MANILA Pope Francis waded into the global debate on climate change and the environment on Sunday, saying in the text of a speech that man was destroying nature and betraying God's calling to be stewards of creation.
Francis offered his thoughts about the environment and climate change for the second time in four days at a rally with young people at a Manila university on the last full day of a week-long Asian tour that has taken him to Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
He did not read all of a speech prepared for delivery at the university, improvising after he was moved by the story of an abandoned girl. When he does this, the Vatican says the prepared text is official.
"As stewards of Gods creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family. When we destroy our forests, ravage our soil and pollute our seas, we
betray that noble calling," he said in the text.
Another line he read to the crowd noted that "this country, more than many others, is likely to be seriously affected by climate change".

well fine, is the pope calling for something analogous to affirmative action in this context.
when the penance is three hail marys and a donation to al gore, then we might have reason to worry.
I guess my copy of the Ten Commandments is defective. It says nothing about being stewards of God's creation. Furthermore, the commandment "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image" directly prohibits the worship of created things (trees, rocks, animals, astronomical bodies, or another human being.)
In the same article: "Paul the Apostle identifies the worship of created things (rather than the Creator) as the cause of the disintegration of sexual and social morality in his letter to the Romans."
At most one could point at this quote:
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But this still does not imply stewardship. It talks about complete ownership of all the Earth's biosphere by humans, wisely or not, as God did not add "as long as your actions are good for the climate."
This does not mean, of course, that humans shouldn't keep their home clean. I do my best with my house; however I do not worship my house, and certainly I'm not going to sacrifice my needs in order to protect this tile or that area of wall paint. If necessary, I will damage them today and repair them tomorrow. This process does not require involvement of the Pope; at most I call a contractor.
If you care about Christian things for the sake of Christ, then it will make sense to affiliate with some church even if it isn’t perfect (and if it was perfect, it would cease to be so once you joined)
He sounds more like ALGORE every day.
OMW, did he really say that? Christians on here know more about the Bible than he does
In no way did he suggest that rocks or plants or whatever should be worshiped. Jeesh!
I think this is a simplistic interpretation of what Pope Francis says and allows the liberals to monopolize the issue of environmental preservation. Good stewardship of our earth is a Christian obligation and doesn’t mean killing off the whales, dolphins, or engaging in mass deforestation. Francis is simply calling man to the Christian virtue of using resources in a manner that does not threaten human extinction. This is not a liberal issue and for God’s sake we ought not to engage in knee jerk reaction and surrender the preservation of the environment to the liberals and secularists.
OCCUPY Vatican
Whoda think?
H.R. Giger was one seriously scary person.
I loved the set for Alien. But even Ridley Scott said he was freaked out by Giger.
In examining his coup d'état of the papacy, I believe he took power. The details of Benedict's ouster were covered in the Italian and foreign press much better than here in the US. Frightening and scary.
The pope has got to know that lefties are going to jump all over this. Some kind of careful explanation would be in order, to head off that kind of evil exploitation. Maybe it’s actually in there.
Our federal head (Adam and Eve) betrayed God by eating the forbidden fruit and mankind died spiritually that day. Betraying the environment is nothing in comparison to what they did.
But the Amazing thing is that God made the first sacrifice for their clothing out of animal skins - symbolizing the sacrifice of His son in the place of folks like us. Anyone who believes it is Christ alone that atoned their sins may escape the penalty of their sins (eternal punishment) and have abundant life everlasting instead.
If the vatican fell into the hands of puppeteers... hmm.
Even Benedict seemed to be pretty wimpy, given the modern capabilities at the hands of popes. He could just bring up disobedient dioceses’ websites right on his desktop.
No, it sounds to me like he is part of the Earth First movement that will ultimately lead to the extinction of man in order to save the planet.
If carbon dioxide is going to destroy the earth, then the only way to save the planet is to destroy man. We are not going to reduce our "carbon footprint" without aborting 90% of the babies on the planet and killing off everyone who isn't on board with the socialist agenda.
This Pope is starting to tick me off.
How exactly am I destroying this earth? I want details. If he’s accusing me of doing a wrong, then specify the exact wrongdoing. I want to know where and how I have sinned.
That is the classic evanglical/scriptural view.
Even yet, we have certain things that God wants Christians to do. Being libertine isn’t on the list.
Ha ha what a joke Pope, how did you Catholics get stuck with this winner?
Maybe they’ll start small... it’s a sin to not recycle if you can, or some such thing.
