I was out camping in the woods outside of town with friends when I was 8 to 10 years old. Campfire and all.
Same here.
When I was 5 my mother used to let me and my 6 y.o. sister walk to the corner grocery store alone.
Even in Alaska this common
I was spent Summer vacation up there I was out there near Denli State park with uncle and my family
Says something about how American society has changed since I was a kid.
It appears that the breakdown of trust is irreversible.
I walked to and from school 3 miles every day when I was a tween - alone.
Without parental accompaniment.
Really the hysteria over kids walking to and from school alone is just sad.
They don’t allow kids to be responsible for their own safety anymore. We truly have become The Pussy Nation.
My walk to elementary school was uphill both ways.
Letting your kids walk where they want during daytime is now considered child abuse by overzealous bureaucrats and dumb cops.
In today’s world, I probably would not let my children be that far away from home to walk home by themselves.
I am quite old, and in my time as a child, I roamed the neighborhood by myself and rode my bicycle to the school library which was over a mile from my house. No one thought of a child not being safe to do that.
As a young woman, I had a flat tire on my way to Tyler, Texas. Two black men stopped and changed my tire for me. It never crossed my mind those men might harm me. I had a flat and these nice men changed it. If that happened today, I’d lock myself in the car and call AAA and wait for them to come change the tire. Today is not like it was years ago.
Our parents barely saw us during the summer. We used to ride our bikes down the railroad bed to go fishing at the lake about 3 miles outside of town.
I walked my sister to school every day starting when she was 6. I was 10. During the summer and other non-school days my mom scooted us five kids out the door in the morning to play on our own. Same for all the kids in the neighborhood. No matter how far we wandered, we knew enough to be back for lunch and dinner. Times have changed.
I used to do this all the time when I was a kid. Not alone, but with a brother or two, but crime was higher then (1970s) then now, supposedly.
This is not a free country any more.
During daytime, I would not be worried much about my kids’ safety.
I would never let them out at night though.
There’s a fine line between responsible and neglectful parenting.
People have figured out for thousands of years, without the help of bureaucrats and cops, through trial and error, how much freedom their kids can sensibly enjoy.
It still happens in Squirrel Hill, a half-Jewish neighborhood in the City of Pittsburgh, PA. I see pairs of little kids (Orthodox), holding hands, walking together.
When I was 12 (and I’m not that old) a bunch of us kids would go out to the woods where we built a big earthen berm to blast cans with one of the boy’s Dad’s shotguns.
Maybe that’s the difference. No one is going to try to kidnap kids carrying 20 gauge shotguns.
In a related story, A belated warrant has been issued for the arrest of Laura Inglles Wilders parents for letting their children walk school several miles a day !
