Mayor isn’t going to convince anybody that this was aimed at the families. For it to have even a hope of flying, he’d need to get the families of the dead cops to support him, and I don’t think that’s gonna happen.
One of the problems with the modern 24 hour news cycle is that pols (and others) feel the need to respond to everything that happens to them. In this case, saying nothing would have benefited de Blasio. Instead, he feels the need to respond to everything lest the “enemy” get the upper hand. Sometimes silence is golden.
If I’m one of the deceased’s family members I would be tempted to come out and rebuke De blassio. He’d probably go after their death benefits, though.
