NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio blasts police who turned their backs at cops' funerals

NEW YORK – Mayor Bill de Blasio, his administration threatened to be overwhelmed by a rift with rank-and-file New York Police Department officers, on Monday condemned the thousands of cops who turned their backs to him during a pair of funerals for slain police officers.

In his first public remarks on the officers' protests, de Blasio said the cops' searing rebuke was hurtful to the families of the two officers killed in an ambush last month and was an offense to the city at large.

"Those individuals who took certain actions the last two weeks, they were disrespectful to the families involved. That's the bottom line," de Blasio said at a news conference held at police headquarters. "I can't understand why anyone would do such a thing in the context like that."

Thousands of cops show up at a funeral to show respect and turn their back on this guy and this guy says they are showing disrespect to the families????? People are stupid but not that stupid, they know exactly who those cops disrespected.

He should have just kept his mouth shut and moved on instead of looking like a spoiled child with this stupid tactic keeping this alive. This is not going to get the reaction he is hoping for.....just the opposite in fact. One of the dumbest political moves I have witnessed.

“I can’t understand why anyone would do such a thing in the context like that.”

Classic liberal view, his actions and words should not ever have any negative reaction, only positive reactions. The classic example is when they don’t understand why people move from high tax states.

But really these cops were just making it easier for him given the number of times he’s stabbed them in the backs....

Police unions often support conservatives, not always but often as the cops do know who supports them.

He says the officers’ turning their backs to him is “an offense to the city at large.”

De Blasio thinks he’s Louis XIV. Le NYC c’est moi.

This isn’t l’ancien regime in France. - it’s 21st century NY. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the fire.

The NYPD has many unions, depending on what rank you are. By far the largest union, the PBA, endorsed Bill Thompson during the last mayoral election. Thompson lost in the primary to DeBlasio. The PBA did not endorse DeBlasio during the general election. The turnout was so low and few cops live within the 5 boroughs that almost no cops voted for DeBlasio.

OK, so turning their backs is not the best option.

How do you think the NYC cops as a whole should address this problem of their boss showing public disrespect towards them that led to two of them getting whacked?

Deblasio, the German American that changed his name to curry political favor with the New York Jews can be disrespected for the simple reason he is due no respect.

He might not have felt to good in changing his name. After all, Karl Marx was a German and Wilhelm/DeBlasio's inspiration.

That's an interesting question. I don't have the answers.

I want to reiterate that in no way standing up for the mayor, who I find despicable.

A funeral seems like not the right place for this type of demonstration. While I would not have allowed him to come, that is an irrelevant point. The policeman's widow did.

Oddly, I have no problem with the "looking down." That seemed to have less of a "look at me" aspect to it.

I disagree, they need to humiliate him at every possible venue. There was no disrespect shown to their fallen fellow officers. It was in fact the most respectful way to honor them by laying blame squarely on the mayor as to why they were attending this funeral in the first place.

Ahh, but the strawberries that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox DID exist, and I'd have produced that key if they hadn't of pulled the Caine out of action. I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officers... --Captain Queeg

What other recourse do cops have to express their opinion as a unified force? That thousands of cops showed up to the funeral proved that we respect the family of the fallen officers. And I 100% guarantee you that cops will do more for the families of these cops than the city will ever come close to doing.

If turning our backs to the Mayor, and only the Mayor, during a short speech is too much for people to handle then I suggest thicker skin.

“A funeral seems like not the right place for this type of demonstration.”

Not just a funeral for a dead guy. A funeral for a man who died in a low intensity War that the Mayor himself did as much as he possibly could to provoke. It’s going to get worse. Hard left ideologues are incapable of retreat.

Thanks for posting this information! I was wondering about this too. Although I blame the citizens of NYC for electing a known marxist/communist as their mayor, it's refreshing to know that the PBA did not endorse de Blasio. The citizens of NYC deserve what they get for electing this clown, but those who protect said citizens, in the NYPD, never wanted him as mayor in the first place and you can plainly see why.

I imagine this is going over real well with his protective detail, which is likely NYPD.
