Replacing Speaker Boehner: Here's How It's Done
Freedom Works ^ | 1/4/2015 | JOSH WITHROW

Posted on 01/04/2015 6:56:14 PM PST by dontreadthis

December’s disgraceful CRomnibus debacle fresh in mind, House conservatives may finally be ready to hand the most powerful gavel in the House from John Boehner to a more principled leader when they vote for Speaker of the House on January 6th. Replacing Boehner is both possible and necessary for a multitude of reasons, but it’s important to understand how the vote works in order to counter the misinformation that has already started coming from those with a vested interest in keeping the status quo.

Under the Constitution, the Speaker of the House must be elected each Congress by a majority of present Members of the House – 218 votes at the current count – and the Speaker election must occur before any other business in the new Congress. Although both parties typically nominate a single candidate before the vote takes place, any Member of the House can vote for any person to become Speaker – they can even vote for someone who is not in Congress at all!

This means that under the current numbers (246 Republicans to 188 Democrats) only 29 Republicans need to vote for someone other than Boehner in order to force another vote. The House will hold as many votes as necessary until one individual gets to the magic 218.

An important point to take away from this is that there is literally no way the Democrats could get the necessary votes to elect a Speaker of their choice unless a large number of Republicans were to join them. The charge that voting against Boehner could lead to a Speaker Pelosi (an accusation that was tossed around last time in 2013 and is sure to come back) is ridiculous and impossible.

At least two conservative members so far, Reps. Ted Yoho (FL) and Louie Gohmert (TX), have stepped up as possible alternatives to Boehner, and many more have publicly refused to vote for him. There's no question at this point that there enough conservatives who are dissatisfied with Boehner's leadership to keep him from a third term as Speaker if they were to stand together.

But voting against the sitting Speaker of the House is a huge political risk for anyone involved – Leadership can kick them off of committees, make it impossible for their bills to get a vote, and even support primary challengers against them. Polls already show a large majority of Republican voters want a new Speaker, but the Republicans in Congress need to hear from you, to know that their constituents stand with them. It’s crucial to send messages and phone calls to their offices to help bolster their resolve.

“they can even vote for someone who is not in Congress at all! “.......

Want to shake up the whole world, vote Sarah Palin as Speaker and stand back, there would be a real explosion then. (It would be fun to watch).

Boehner has been the republican leader since 2006, that's 8 years. As minority leader and as majority leader since 2011, what do we have to show for it?

It doesn’t work like this in actuality. The caucuses meet separately, in private, and choose their candidates. Then, the whole caucus votes for that candidate in the public floor vote.

You WILL NOT know how your representative voted in the caucus meeting unless they tell you (and you believe them). 100% of the GOP reps will vote for the same candidate on the floor.

What happens if 50 Democrats cross over to vote Boehner in as Speaker of the House?

Can we get the pitchforks out if that happens?

Just announced that Marty Stutzman will vote against Boehner.

29 needed to derail Boehner, 16 still needed.

Call Congressmen outside your district & let them know. I did since my Congressthing is James Clyburn who hates white people so no sense in calling his office.

If Boehner remains speaker due to Democrat votes he'll lose any chance he may have of controlling his caucus.

Freedom Works has just announced (2015-01-05) that they're getting involved with the "FIRE John Boehner" movement.

Wonders never cease. (/sarcasm-off)

Some argue that Freedom Works is a despicable organization, starting with the "top" .... Matt Kibbe ...

After being a member of $$$ contributor to Freedom Works for some time, I "personally" contacted Matt Kibbe and over Twelve of Freedom Works executive staff about participating in the 2015-01-03 rallies against Obama Amnesty and to FIRE John Boehner.

They never even replied.

Freedom Works boasts over 8,000 "public member groups".

They could have easily made a difference, but choose not to.

It's another case when "hidden agendas", "leadership egos" and the $$$ financial lechery of so-called "Patriot Groups" is KILLING the American Tea Party movement.

Some argue that groups like ALIPAC and Freedom Works only got involved in the FIRE John Boehner activity (after it had been "massively" nationally broadcast at Free Republic and Facebook (for over a month) ...

because it was a "fund raising opportunity" ...

and because they were so damned embarrassed to be "behind the curve".

Freedom Works is disgusting similar to other "Conservative Patriot" groups ...

where we are asked to Sign a STUPID Petition (that goes straight to the trash) ... and then send Freedom Works, WMD, Eric Erickson (ad nausuem) a $ 25 donation.

For groups like Freedom Works the MOST ALARMING aspect of the 2015-01-03 national rallies was the organizer REFUSED TO ACCEPT DONATIONS.

Frankly, America is politically screwed if our "leadership" continues the "secret backdoor corruption" that's been the dirty little secret for years and years.

Boehner won't be thrown out. He is firmly entrenched in his position. All these stories about a coup are silly. The powerful in Washington remain in power. Nothing will change.

Go cry somewhere else.

He should have lost the caucus when he used Dem votes to pass key *Obama* legislation.

Why not use it now, and declare a truly bipartisan congressional session?

By my reckoning, there are only 14 with enough backbone to oppose him. Perhaps calls from the base will push this number up, but it does not feel like enough to push him out.
