BEDFORD PARK (WABC) -- William King has lived in his Bronx neighborhood for 40 years, and since 1974 he has felt safe - that is until Saturday afternoon when he was brutally beaten in broad daylight. The vicious encounter was caught on home surveillance camera.
"I got a cut above over my eyelid, and the side of my face is numb - I can't open my mouth that well and I had a lump the size of a baseball on the side of my head," says King.
The incident happened near the corner of Briggs Avenue and East 197th Street in Bedford Park - not in the wee hours of the morning, but at 2 in the afternoon on a beautiful, bright and busy day.
One man pounded the 67-year-old, while another acted as a lookout - both were left empty-handed.
"I believe it was a racial attack - they weren't trying to rob me, I had money on me and my wallet and all. They weren't trying to rob me," adds King....

Let me guess: They was just getting they life together, working on they G.E.D., had a budding career in the hip-hop music genre, looking to pay child support as soon as they could find a job, was good kids, didn’t do nuthin’, etc., etc...
The victim got it right. “They’re animals”. “They’re not human”. “It was a racial attack”. What the reporter should be saying is...”If you have any information about this racial attack by these animals...”

I’m pretty amazed, too. The Bronx has a lot of decent neighborhoods, mostly Irish, Jewish and Hispanic, although there are a few bad pockets.
But you’re usually pretty safe there, and I think he was exactly right: it was a racial attack. The guys just wanted to slug him, maybe not go all the way to killing him, but just punish him for being a vulnerable older white man and then get on with their day.
I’m noticing it doesn’t happen in cities that issue CPP’s.
I will never live in a state where I cannot be armed. Period.
I’m an “older white man” too, but at six feet and 340lbs, it’s funny, but not too many look on me as easy meat. LOL

When I go someplace where I know I’ll be surrounded but cannot be armed (i.e., the V.A. hospital) I carry a five foot long quarterstaff as a “cane” with me. Many a yeoman or peasant has fought off a knight armed with a sword with only a quarterstaff.
A .38 snubby would put a stop to this.
