Marquettes suspension of a professor apparently for criticizing an instructor who seemingly refused to allow discussion of anti-gay views in her philosophy of ethics class reminds me about the Marquette unlawful harassment training, which Id been meaning to blog about.
Some months ago, Marquette conducted training on Unlawful Harassment Prevention for Higher Ed Faculty and Graduate Assistants. As usual, the training involved some specific vignettes, with questions and answers. I have copies of the screenshots from one of the vignettes, and here are some excerpts (this John McAdams (Marquette Warrior) post also has more):
All week, Becky and Maria have been talking about their opposition to same-sex marriage .
Their coworker Hans is offended .
Even though Becky and Maria were only expressing their opinions and didnt mean to offend, they could still be engaging in harassment. The complainant does not need to be involved in the conversation to be offended .
Liability Avoidance Tip[:] Although employees have free speech rights under the United States Constitution, in academic and other workplaces those rights are limited when they infringe upon another persons right to work in an environment free of unlawful harassment
.

The same thing can happen if you tell them that you own guns or vote Republican... If you say that you own guns or support the Second Amendment, they will say that you are threatening them. If you say that you vote Republican (or in Wisconsin support Scott Walker), you are instantly branded a racist, sexist warmonger, and thus are harassing them.
Sounds like it’s the university doing the harrassing by delving into the thoughts/beliefs of its employees.
Group-think thought police...............
Marquette is a Jesuit run ostensibly Catholic university. The Jesuits have devolved into a despicable, unspeakable cabal.
If opposition to a hotly debated political issue is illegal, then political debate is illegal, and we are in a tyranny. Does Marquette really want to foment an uprising?
Marquette is going to have this problem until the local Ordinary wakes up and boots a couple lesbian department heads at MU.
“Does Marquette really want to foment an uprising?”
A communist one, yes.
It’s all bull$h!t. Only certain kinds of “offense” count. If a certified victim group member complains his complaint counts. Normal peoples’ complaints don’t count.
Their real problem would be exposed if they claimed wearing a cross was unlawful harassment.
It is a tyranny - the professor McAdams has been suspended and may lose his job. That’s serious repression.
The current pope is a Jesuit.
There are a few REALLY good ones in the public eye --- Fr. Mitch Pacwa SJ at EWTN, Fr. Joe Fessio SJ at Ignatius Press--- an old friend of mine, Fr. Ray SJ, an academic and pastor. (Ordained about 20 yeas ago, he told me even then that it was a harrowing ordeal to get though the Jesuit seminary training, because he had to conceal for years his complete loyalty to Catholic teaching: if they had known, hey would have canned him. No joke.)
They used to be the best of the best. Now they're the worst of the worst.
Why did that happen? I'm tempted to say "intellectual pride" and way too much money, much of it--- I suspect--- in endowments from pious donors who set up funds for them ages ago when the Jesuits were still Catholic. But there must be a whole step-by-step institutional history of corruption, and then the whole "Old Boys Network" of the corrupt recruiting and advancing the corrupt.
I don't know what could help the situation short of a neutron bomb.
Pray.

The truth? The Jesuit order in the United States is dominated by homosexuals. In short their once proud, Catholic universities have been perverted. Why would any believing Catholic wish to spend $60,000/ year at Georgetown, Fordham, Boston College. Marquette or any of them. There are still some individual loyal and good Catholic Jesuit priests, but as a group they cannot be trusted and objectively are viewed as harmful to the Church and the faithful. In the 18th century, the papacy disbanded the order. Sadly it will be necessary to repeat this action soon.
Marquette is a failed academic institution. It embodies everything wrong associated with the Catholic Church.
The ironic thing is that often private “religious” institutions of higher learning are the worst offenders when it comes to academic freedom and free speech rights.
At least at public institutions, there are public oversight mechanism including boards and the legislature. If this free speech violation had occurred at a public institution, the aggrieved party would be able to complain to their state rep, senator, governor, or board of regents.
Although the Milwaukee Archbishop has no direct control of a Jesuit university like Marquette, he has standing with the Catholic community and needs to strongly and unequivocally condemn the university’s actions. But, I won’t hold my breath waiting.
Another day of hey let’s make up a law.
I was told 20+ years ago that there was furious fight within
the SJ order between the “Straights” and the “Homo’s” over control. The SJ Order member that told me this was “straight” and that he feared for the Order.
” The Jesuits have devolved into a despicable, unspeakable cabal.”
This happened 40 years ago. Hard-core leftists.
Opposition to heterosexual sex is harassment.
I was once a huge Marquette basketball fan, but when they changed their name from Warriors to Golden Eagles, I saw the writing on the wall. That they have devolved to the point of P.C. insanity doesn’t surprise me at all.
