A third of children in the UK aged between ten and 13 do not know that Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, according to a survey.

What’s more, half the population considers Jesus’s birth irrelevant to their festive celebrations, while only one adult in ten can correctly state four facts about the Nativity.

Critics claim the research shows schools are becoming too politically correct and are not putting on Nativity plays for fear of offending people of different religions.

"A third of children in the UK aged between ten and 13 do not know that Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus"

...and that third would be the ones named Muhammad.

From the UK Independent: " Muhammad is the most popular babies’ name in England and Wales, when its three main spelling variations are counted. Amelia was the top name for girls for the third year in a row. More than 7,400 boys were called Muhammad, Mohammed or Mohammad last year. Oliver, the name which officially took the top spot, was only given to 6,949 babies."

Too many reruns of Love Actually.

I thought Bill Nighy was hilarious though.

Isn't it Father Christmas in Britain.

Santa Claus is a corruption of the Dutch version of "St. Nicholas" which arose in New York state, I believe.

The reindeer may be an invention of Clement Clarke Moore. I don't think they are mentioned in the Bible.

In reality, Jesus was born in the spring. This is why the Puritans banned the celebration of Christmas once Cromwell came to power.

The origins of Christmas are a Druid festival which marked the time when they first noticed the daylight was finally growing longer. Ditto for the Christmas tree and the Yule log.

However, it evolved into an appropriate celebration for the birth of Our Lord because he came at a dark time in history and brought us light.

Yes it is. That and Santa Claus. We know the St Nick name, but its not well used.

I gather Father Christmas isn’t well known or used in the US?.

Probably most Americans are completely unfamiliar with the term "Father Christmas." The exceptions would be those who are aware of its use in Britain.

The poem "The Night Before Christmas" refers to St. Nicholas and St. Nick but never uses the term Santa Claus.
