CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - On Tuesday around 3 p.m., protesters filled Public Square in response to the recent killing of 12-year-old Cleveland boy Tamir Rice and the lack of an indictment in Ferguson, MO.
The growing crowd then walked onto the shoreway, blocking traffic between West 3rd and East 9th Streets. The group is chanting "Hands up! Don't shoot!" They also chanted "No justice! No peace!" and "Whose streets? Our streets!"Chief of Police Calvin Williams is on the scene with multiple units responding.
"People need to remain calm and be peaceful," said Williams.
Protesters have a united front, encouraging others to "link up and stay late." Cleveland Police are along the perimeter, letting it play out. Police have called in a sheriff's bus, among other units, in case of mass arrests.
There is no word yet from the police chief about how long they will let this continue or what the plan is, if any exists. At this time, they are asking drivers to remain in their vehicles as they work to move through the protests.
Around 5:30 p.m., protesters starting leaving the shoreway after blocking traffic for more than an hour. It appears they are headed back to Public Square. Many vehicles stuck in traffic are beeping their support. 19 Action News reporter Dawn Kendrick says the protest is more organized, but still chaotic. Many out-of-towners are involved.
Councilman Zach Reed believes this makes a great teaching moment, emphasizing how people need to obey police orders, such as putting their hands up.
"Young people need to respect police officers," said Reed.
Reed has been a supporter of body cameras for police. He believes every officer should be wearing one.
Rice was shot at Cudell Recreation Center this past weekend by a Cleveland police officer. Rice had a BB gun that had the orange safety indicator removed.

Why don’t the police just announce that they are pulling out of neighborhoods that don’t want them? ( yes, I know they can’t).
Glad to see that they deal with the riff raff in the home of my alma mater
Obama has been trying to foment an National race war and its starting to work.
Note: IF you, god forbid, ever have to visit the downtown Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, they have a 1st class heart center and the world renowned Taussig Cancer Center there, then I urge you to stay on the clinic grounds because if you stray too far into the surrounding ghetto, you may end up needing the clinic`s world class trauma center!
THE BROWNS ARE GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!
It’s 35 in Cleveland tonight.
Here near Cincinnati it’s 41, I was just outside in a windbreaker for about an hour.
Clevelanders can do 35 in a t-shirt.
Ah yes, Cleveland protests; the perfect time for the thugs from the East side and West side to converge downtown to pluck some moronic crackers standing in solidarity with this nonsense.
A wet one?
(*firehoses*)
It isn’t much of a riot. It’s a staged media event.
“about” 500 blocked I44 in St Louis. 500 isn’t even the visitors side in a high school basketball gymnasium.
The protesters were saying they were going to be there all night.
But, according to the news, it’s already fizzled away.
I didn’t even have time to make popcorn.
I hafta admit, this one gets me PO’d toward the cops. Whatever happened to shotguns? Shotguns are just as fatal as bullets, yet provide better options than bullets. Moreover, a warning blast on the ground near the suspect or in the air should make it very clear if the person is truly dangerous. Then shoot to kill, if needed. The cops are shooting waaay too prematurely on dogs and humans.
so what?
who gives a damn about Cleveland?
I noticed that. Probably getting extra credit for a selfie taken at a 'demonstration'.
The lack of size to these protests, the number of white faces I've seen, and the overall common sense of black conservative voters in the last election, tell me that many blacks are seeing this for what it is.
You attack a police officer in his own squad car, and there's a good chance there will be some lousy consequences. That's just old fashioned common sense. It doesn't matter who you are.
How do they know the people stuck in traffic are “beeping in solidarity”? Maybe they just want them to get the heck out of the way so they can go home from their JOBS. That they’ve been at ALL DAY.
Cleveland?
Hmmm, isn’t that the place where boys and girls take their pees in the same facilities?
Obama’s plan is working well, this should bury all his scandals and lawlessness deep enough to last for a good while, he has given the MSM all they need to continue to provide all the cover he needs, this is why he is their hero, their king.
“Pants up! Don’t loot!”
The scum have the city. Let them have it. Nobody will notice.
Didn’t this happen once before ?
Where they stayed out, and then there was looting, etc. ?
Oh, I hope that’s a true story.
It’s funny either way, though.
