Gay men just got a step closer to being able to donate blood.
Since 1983, men who have had sex with men anytime since 1977 were barred from donating blood, a policy put in place because of the HIV/AIDs epidemic, which especially ravaged the gay community in its early years.
But on Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety voted 16-2 to tweak the ban, according to Bloomberg BusinessWeek, suggesting instead that men who have had sex with men could give blood, but with a caveat. Theyd have to be abstinent for one year.
It will be the Food and Drug Administration that makes the final call, but generally the HHS panels advice is respected.

LOL!
It's tested.
I’m going to pull a Kramer and store my own blood in my freezer if they do this.
I don’t want queer blood or the not yet detected HIV that may come along for the ride.
We need to remind this government who the sovereign is.
Working on 11th gallon. I’ll quit if they allow homosexuals to give blood.
As I have posted multiple times in thread on this subject, these sorry bass-turds are directly responsible for the deaths of innocent people in the 80s. One of these innocents was a childhood friend with hemophilia who had to use clotting factors derived from donated blood. He was robbed of life by these perverse butt-humpers. I have nothing but disgust for them. They deserve nothing and we deserve to have a clean blood supply.
I’m permanently banned from donation due to serving in the US military in West Germany with potential exposure to CJV. The poofter crowd deserves nothing less.
Sure, like many of them would be truthful? Remember when gays fought the sodomy law in Texas and won by saying they just wanted to be left alone in the bedroom? They had no intention of pushing for gay marriage or becoming involved in pedophilia?
NO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know.
I do know this man tested negative when he had first gotten really sick. It has been a long time, but seems that he was exposed in late January or early February and tested negative until March.
This is a horrible decision and those who have pushed it through should be the first in line for this blood.
Just like “monogamy,” “abstinence” means something entirely different in the homosexual world.
It's all a part of the conquering of normal America.
The window to detect HIV is weeks or months. What homo writes down on his calendar the last time he takes it up the poop chute? They will lie or “conveniently” forget, and infected blood WILL enter the blood supply.
Would YOU knowingly accept a transfusion from the “tested” blood of a recently sexually active homosexual man, given the choice?
Not only that, but the goal of AIDS carriers is to get their viral loads down to undetectable levels. As is typical of activists, expect them to reinterpret this rule to their own liking. The deferral period will mean nothing to them. And some HIV carriers will likely donate to make a point that even THEY shouldn't be discriminated against.
To spread their poison.
True, but aren’t we already relying on them to honestly self identify?
Leni
If this becomes reality I’ll simply stop donating and I think many others will, too.
