The national marijuana legalization debate is moving into the backyard of a Republican-controlled Congress, now that the District of Columbia has voted to legalize growing, possessing and sharing small amounts of pot.
Voters in Oregon and Alaska also approved legalization initiatives, joining Colorado and Washington state, where pot is already legally available.
But while states out West enjoy both autonomy and distance, federal lawmakers have the power to quash any District law they dont like. And with legalization getting a foothold on the East Coast for the first time, the Districts initiative could force Congress to make decisions affecting the future of legal pot nationwide.

Since there aren’t any other pressing issues to take up their time.....
They already are. In the form of alcohol and tobacco. Explain to me what's the real difference between the lot of'em. And yes, I have experienced the majority of them at one time or another over the course of my life. Currently, I partake of none. I do not smoke pot. When I tried it all it accomplished was making me hungry and paranoid. My physique makes it painfully obvious that I have no problem with hunger, so why pay to be paranoid? And no, I am not a libertarian.
Please, someone "enlighten" me. d:^)
More useless POSs who lay about wasting away on uncles dollar. The dream of the dhimmicrat party.
Alcohol effects you today. The mind altering effects of pot and LSD are long term and insidious. And the paranoid effects you speak of are real and not body fat related and can and sometimes do become psychosis.
Exactly
It's more than not wanting to spend the money. It's not wanting to go after these people at all. Not wanting vicious armies of ultra-armed police crashing down doors (sometimes the wrong door, oops) and confiscating property without convictions (sometimes the wrong property, oops).
I'm no libertarian and I don't like the idea of more pot or any drug being more available but I'm so sick of these gestapo (nazi reference on the internet, oops) tactics in our United States that I'm willing to see all drugs legalized, just to get rid of property forfeitures and ballooning SWAT mobilizations.
Pot vending machines with EBT card access. Problem solved.
I could see some city like Houston or New Orleans doing this, with city tax revenue. But it’s not a fed-supported project. Go find fifty Democratic senators who’d support it. Even Harry Reid won’t support that idea.
Haven’t you heard? Congress doesn’t matter any more. The Choom King himself would sign the EO making it happen.
A gramme is better than a damn!
Dope for the dopes.
DC is not a state and not really autonomous. They have a pretend congressional rep but she is just window dressing
Since federal law controls, the can legally be no pot in DC
It is just a matter of enforcement

Is this idiot unaware of the fact that all of the Republicans who prevailed in this week’s election will not take office until January?
Colorado is still red ...see yesterday.
Well, that’s fine. But this thread essentially does not raise heroin as subject to efforts toward legalization, so kindly take your red herring elsewhere.
I finally let my curiosity get the best of me and visited a local pot store and its not like walking into a 7-11.
Just in the 30 or minutes I was there I saw at least $1,000 in sales. I was amazed at the clientele was a even split between classic stoners and regular looking folks. My point is it was a pretty steady stream of people going in to legally purchase weed.
Avoiding taxes is going to be the big stickler. If you grow some in your garden and it makes it onto the street, how is the government going to know? If you grow 3 lbs of pot and it is selling for $150 an oz, are you going to turn that down?
The day it becomes legal to grow it in Virginia, it’s going into the soil next to the house.
I did the math and based upon setting up a commercial grow in a 1,500 sq.ft. building I figured I could net about $400K/yr assuming each plant only produced 2 ounces per harvest, which is pretty conservative. There are are a lot of factors that if done right could boost plant production to 5 or more ounces.
I imagine if it sells for $250 an oz on the street, the buyers for the manufacturing plants will give you about 1/3 of that. They are carrying the liability insurance.
