The State of Michigan is ordering a Detroit man to pay tens of thousands of dollars, or go to prison. The reason? He owes back child support for a child that everyone agrees is not his.
"I feel like I’m standing in front of a brick wall with nowhere to go," said Carnell Alexander.
He says he learned about the paternity case against him during a traffic stop in Detroit in the early 90s. The officer told him he is a deadbeat dad, there was a warrant out for his arrest.
“I knew I didn’t have a child, so I was kind of blown back,” said Alexander.
The state said he fathered a child in 1987, and ignored a court order to pay up. It was the first Carnell had heard of the court order. He'd never even met the child.
“And when you were telling them in court – that it was not my child?" "They told me it was too late to get a DNA test," said Alexander.
It also was not easy to get a DNA test. Alexander didn't know where the woman was that had claimed he fathered a child. He only had an 8th-grade education, off-and-on employment at the time, and no money to hire help....

I think it’s just good ole fashioned money grubbing government revenue chasing. They do not care. they have bureaucrats sitting waiting for stuff like this. It was all by their book and he owes. That’s their line. They know he can’t fight it.

No, you are right and I’m wrong; that was from Oliver Twist. I just looked it up, and should have done so before posting. Too long since I read any Dickens, I guess, that and trusting my memory (increasingly often a mistake).
I do too......one such guy was a co-worker who had to pay support on a daughter who was in the Navy.....This went on for a year and he still couldn't get the court to stop it.
The system does not want the precedent. It can screw up a revenue stream. Plus women voters would really not like that.
If a non-married man can beat having to pay child support if DNA evidence shows he's not the father, then there will be pressure to make DNA matching standard procedure before awarding child support.
And then married men will argue, on "equal protection" grounds, that they should not have to pay child support for children that are the product of a wife's unfaithfulness.

One of my friends shocked me by telling me his new girlfriend wanted to have a baby. He has kids in college. The first thing out of his mouth was “I don’t have any money”.

Not only should they Prosecute the process server, I would bet he has a 100% of recovering DAMAGES from said Process server. SUE the prick also, take everything he owns.

The amazing thing is that a woman is allowed to put any name she desires on a legal document without fear of the law. She never has to provide any evidence that she is telling the truth nor does it matter in the eyes of the law.
I have a friend who is listed on his ex-wife’s daughter’s birth certificate even though he was in a same-sex relationship at the time. He didn’t want the girl to grow up thinking she was the by-product of a one night stand.
I’m fine with the presumption that a woman’s husband is the father of a child, and the presumption that the name on the birth certificate is the father of a child. It should be a rebuttable presumption, though: the father can challenge and provide evidence and proof that he is not the father. Easy enough.
Yes they made him pay it even though he had receipts and she confirmed he had been paid.
The problem was that it did not go threw the state so they could get their cut of the child support. So he went to jail and they took his checks for about three months till he could pay all the child support he had already paid. My sister ended up giving it back to him minus the fee but it took about a month and a half to get threw the system.
It is a scam what they do.
I know another guy who owed child support and they wanted him to tell them when he got a job so the could garnish his wages. So on Monday he called and told them he had a job. The next day they arrested him for not paying child support. He went to jail and lost the job. Good job state of Michigan there.
The friend of the court Is just plain damaging to families after the divorce. I know of even more than these two examples of where the court had screwed the man after the divorce with no concern as to how it affects the family.
