The State of Michigan is ordering a Detroit man to pay tens of thousands of dollars, or go to prison. The reason? He owes back child support for a child that everyone agrees is not his.
"I feel like I’m standing in front of a brick wall with nowhere to go," said Carnell Alexander.
He says he learned about the paternity case against him during a traffic stop in Detroit in the early 90s. The officer told him he is a deadbeat dad, there was a warrant out for his arrest.
“I knew I didn’t have a child, so I was kind of blown back,” said Alexander.
The state said he fathered a child in 1987, and ignored a court order to pay up. It was the first Carnell had heard of the court order. He'd never even met the child.
“And when you were telling them in court – that it was not my child?" "They told me it was too late to get a DNA test," said Alexander.
It also was not easy to get a DNA test. Alexander didn't know where the woman was that had claimed he fathered a child. He only had an 8th-grade education, off-and-on employment at the time, and no money to hire help....

He shouldn’t have run from the paternity case but two wrongs do not make a right. This is not fair.
What’s not fair is this guy having to pay child support because he donated his sperm to a sperm bank.

Guy has a rock solid alibi. How many of us could come up with that from 20 years ago?
If they want to put me in jail - I mean I don’t owe support for a child that I know isn’t mine.
Most people just go along with what the system wants.
This man should tell the system to go screw itself.
Isn’t there a TV station willing to interview this guy and call the judge out for being an IDIOT?
Later in the article he had a DNA test done. He is NOT the father as Maury would say.
He was never notified about it. He was in jail when the process server certified that he refused service at his HOUSE. The first he ever knew about it was this year. The real father has been involved in the child's life, apparently, but the state is not interested in pursuing HIM for this, but rather this guy, who the mother fraudulently named. She even admits she lied.
The guy owes nothing but he got a Liberal judge who didn't care about truth. It was about process and who cares if the people involved in the process were liars. . . and even if it were provably so that they were. Too bad. Pay up.

He didn’t run from the paternity case; he was never notified of the case.
The summons officer stated that he delivered the summons, but the man refused to sign the paperwork. However, research showed that at that time this man was in JAIL, so he couldn’t have been served the summons at a house!
This is a case of the system screwing him and then screwing him because he got screwed! THIS IS WRONG!
In most states, if the court orders it, you are stuck, no ands, ifs, or buts. And, to top it off, you have no right to the child as they will argue it isn’t yours.

The State Of Michigan wants to ruin a man’s life over a case in which every one agrees he is not a father and in which he never had an acknowledged relationship with the child in question.
Its Kafkaesque and a perversion of justice.

I don’t see that he donated sperm to a bank. He had dated the mother prior to the baby. She lied and said he was the father in order to get welfare benefits. A document server said he delivered the paternity court papers to this guy back in the late ‘80s and the guy refused to sign. THE GUY SAYS HE NEVER GOT THE PAOERS. The first time he knew about the paternity issue was during a traffic stop in the 90s. He was jailed for being a deadbeat dad.
What happened between then and now I do not know. But now the state wants the money even though a paternity test has proven that this guy IS NOT the father. The state does not care. The mom lied, but because he did not address the charge timely, the state wants to stick him with the tab.

Yes I believe he never got the summons in the late ‘80s. I was talking about when he found out about it in the ‘90s. Maybe I misunderstood something.

If ever there was a reason to abstain until marriage, this is it.
Not from what I gathered. The traffic stop was recent. Maybe I mis-gathered? That’s how this all started now.
He was in jail at the time and the summons was improperly served.
The court has no right to use a summons that couldn’t be served and it should vacate the entire judgment.
Due process was not followed. Sorry if that costs the state $30,000.
Which in any case is the fruit of the poisonous tree.
