So why arent Republicans sitting pretty? The answer, I think, is far more technical than ideological. Democrats are vastly superior when it comes to the mechanics of American politics, and have been for nearly a decade, while the GOPs technical skills have withered since 2004.
President George W. Bush was re-elected in 04 with a vote total 22 percent larger than in 2000, in part because the GOP harnessed the power of volunteers to get out the vote block by block in key states.
Democrats, whod begun to master the use of the Internet as an organizing tool in 2003 and 2004, saw what the Bush campaign did and realized they could duplicate those efforts and then blow them out of the water using then-nascent social-media and mapping techniques.
These began to bear fruit in 2006, were crucial to the Obama 2008 primary victory and subsequent landslide and made all the difference in 2012.
The great triumph of Obamas re-election was his campaigns success at turning out so-called unenthusiastic voters people who would, if pressed, pull the lever for the guy but who were unmotivated to do so.
If Democrats do better in 2014 than the fundamentals suggest, itll be because theyve been able to bring these techniques to bear on the midterm electorate, which has always been significantly smaller and far more engaged than the presidential electorate.
But why couldnt the Democrats press their technical advantage in 2010, when Republicans won 63 seats in the House and nearly 700 down-ticket races across the country?
The answer: Technique doesnt mean everything. When the electorate wants to send a message to Washington in no uncertain terms, as it did after Obamas legislative overreach in 2009 and 2010, the message will be sent.

Your Post #8 nailed it; Little Ray.
NEVER FORGET MISSISSIPPI! NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
Great candidates like Thad Cochran....

I do hope you accidentally omitted the sarc tag. To call this low-life p.o.s. a “great” candidate...... Oh hell, don’t get me started.
And Pat Roberts is a shoe in.
The GOP won in 2004 because of volunteers. I was one of them. I believed Bush was doing the right thing.
The GOP sucked in 2008.
The GOP got better in 2012, but they really need to crank up their game.
Unlike many here, I haven’t given up on them. Redemption is still possible.
I sincerely believe that the GOPe does not want to win control of the Senate.
LOL..... O.K. I figured you out. Hang in there.
Republicans have the tendency to shoot themselves in the foot while trying to get the gun out of the holster.
Democrats will probably retain control of the sENATE.
1. Repubs are stupider than Charlie Brown and the football.
2. Single fornicating women who want free birth control, welfare queens, Too big to fail statist monopolies, hispanics, blacks, asians, undocumented democrats, etc wil vote 90% for a handout.
3. Union workers and thugs will vote to keep their inflated paychecks rather than save America.
4. Leftist, homos, new age techies, millenialists, will all vote Demo because it makes them feel good.
5. Yankees and intellectually burned-out northern and western libtards will reflexily vote democrat.
6. The only ones left to vote conservative are the 30-40% or hard working Americans that pay the freight for the rest of the freeloaders!
Doubt that the blacks and Hispanics will be going to the polls in droves as they did for Obama, to support white RATS who seem to have abandoned Obama.
Because it is not for nothing that the GOP is called "The Stupid Party".
Because the Republican Party is, as a party, feckless.
Feckless
(adjective)
- ineffective; incompetent; futile: feckless attempts to repair the plumbing.
- having no sense of responsibility; indifferent; lazy.
The Republicans stand for nothing.
As an example, consider all the things that they let slide: NSA espionage, IRS targeting, endless national debt, proping up the failed War on Drugs, all manner of contraconstitutional policies (to include ObamaCare), and so on.
Democrats are vastly superior when it comes to the mechanics baiting the low informed and stupid.
No, they really didn't.
The shenanigans they pulled to get Romney, to include retroactive rule-changes to the primaries alone proved that.
(And then there's their non-response on Fast & Furious, ObamaCare, spending, corruption, etc to consider.)
What is that smell?
This author wants to ignore the GOPE war on conservatives?
As the old adage goes, if you stand for nothing you’ll fall for everything.
Exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote that post.
Dems have cheating down to an art. We have losing down to an art.
Meh.....country is done for anyway.
