Dr. Gorbee Logan has given the drug, lamivudine, to 15 Ebola patients, and all but two survived. That's about a 13% mortality rate.
Logan said he got the idea to try lamivudine when he read in scientific journals that HIV and Ebola replicate inside the body in much the same way.
"Ebola is a brainchild of HIV," he said. "It's a destructive strain of HIV."
At first he tried a drug called acyclovir, which is often given to HIV patients to treat infections that occur with their weakened immune systems. But it didn't seem to be effective. Then he tried lamivudine on a health care worker who'd become ill, and within a day or two he showed signs of improvement and survived.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says that theoretically, Logan's approach has some merit. Lamivudine is a nucleocide analog, and other drugs in this class are being studied to treat Ebola.

Not even close. The guy is a quack. It would be great if he found something that slams this virus, but a tiny sample of 13 patients is meaningless.

He’s a quack, except to say that 13 people who are alive that would not be.
13 is greater than the number that received ZMapp.
And a close analogue of this compound has been shown to arrest ebola in the lab.
It’s not good news. Nobody at Fedzilla cares. They are sending 1000 more troops this week, and they are pushing a Zmapp drug that may or may not be as effective as something that has already passed FDA approval for HepB and HIV.
This guy does a VERY limited study, throws a Hail Mary, and touchdown.
It’s not like they flew people in immediately to study it, or treat another cohort of patients with it to see what would happen.
Nothing happened. Fauci MIGHT look into it.
The acyclovir is an anti fungal and it did not respond to that.
It’s off patent.
There’s no money to be made from it.
So pay for it out of Obola's stash. He's into throwing around Billions of other people's money like it ain't no thang.

Monkeying with something like this for profit, and letting thousands die, is about the nearest thing I can call a ‘Crime Against Humanity’ that I can think of.

...and screaming in various articles I’ve been reading that it’s the Republican’s fault due budget cuts.
I smell a RAT here in that the political advantage of blaming the Republicans for creating a shortage of Zmapp could be compromised IF this story gets out, as well it would deter the release of funding for all the would be hero’s on the Left who would Solyndra the R. & D. of new drugs.
Once the money is released from the control of the government it’s open house as it’s sidetracked to many different pockets in the process of achieving unaccountable, and “over budget”.
Yeah this is a story the Left would have preferred CNN NOT have exposed.

I dunno. Seems to me that natural market forces would dictate that if you've got something that is rare, and is highly sought after by a desperate customer base, you're gonna make money selling it.
How much would you be willing to pay for a dose of this drug, if your kid just came down with the symptoms for Ebola? I'll bet (like me) you'd pay whatever it cost.
Aspirin is 'off patent' too, but billions of tablets are sold every year for a profit.
Aspirin isn’t the profit center that Gardasil is however.

Market forces do prevail. Aspirin - Billions of tablets at a small price - lots of people want it and can afford it. Lots of dollars to be made even if they clear just a small amount on each tablet.
Drugs needed for just a few people - yes the people will want to pay whatever it takes, but that’s got a limitation built in as to what they could actually manage to scrape together.
Unless a person’s Insurance covers it, or they are rich, or they steal the money etc, there will be a price beyond which they won’t be able to pay.
The manufacturer will have a pro forma analysis that shows the volume they will need to sell to make a profit. If that volume is not there, they quit making it. Sometimes they keep it going by making it in China or somewhere with less costs.
If it cost a million dollars to make the drug and there’s only 5 people desperate for it, just as an example, then the patients will need to be very rich indeed.
The market determines it all.
Someone tell Dr. Oz. He might actually get the news out. I have read that he has had some programs lately on the Ebola situation.

If this isn’t ripped off favipiravir or lamivudine, it’s likely a close structural analog.
A few years back they said that HIV/AIDS was caused by having sex with monkeys. the other day I read that Ebola was caused my eating monkey meat. I think people should leave the monkeys alone!
