Kevin Williamson, a correspondent for National Review, suggested Monday that women who have abortions should be hanged.
Williamson's tweet came in a back-and-forth on twitter that started with Williamson's piece criticizing a blog post by actress and director Lena Dunham on why women should vote.
The key part of the exchange was captured by Charles Johnson of the blog Little Green Footballs. Here is the exchange:

Don’t know anything about this, but I’d lay odds he was being sarcastic, ironic, or otherwise making some rhetorical point.
The Twitter exchange is included with the article. It appears to me that he allowed himself to get backed into a corner by Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs.
Still, it is an interesting philosophical question.
Hey, murder used to carry that penalty...
This is ok under Sharia Law, especially if the baby aborted was a boy. Right? Or is beheading the only accepted retribution. I’m fuzzy on the details.
Now the democrats will use this in their “Republican war on women” crap.
Who is Kevin Williamson and what difference does it make in the grand scheme national politics if he said something that was likely designed to piss off the libtards at LGF?
Whoever he is - good for him. And after they hang the women, they need to hang the so-called doctors who murdered the babies.
Women who have abortions should be prayed for.
A modest proposal.
Women who have abortions should ask God to forgive them.
Kevin’s position is at least intellectually consistent.
Way too many prolife people refuse to accept that if abortion is murder, then the “mother” is one of the murderers.
It’s much more comfortable, though not logically defensible, to make her “another victim” of the operation.
If you believe that abortion is murder, and in capital punishment for murder, then what other position can you come to?
his Twitter account could have been hacked?
What then, should we do with mothers and doctors and fathers and other persons who kill babies?
The woman allows it. The abortionist does it. Hang him/her.
I’m against the death penalty. What he said was needlessly provocative.
Women who have abortions need to be shown some mercy because as Jesus said on the cross “forgive them Father for they know not what they do”
I would be satisfied if women who advocate for abortion simply not hold public office. Women who have had abortions, like Morgana said, should be prayed for. But this incident of someone suggesting women who’ve had abortions be hanged, is most like hyperbole to get abortion advocates to hyperventilate. Works every time.
Look, I get it. I believe that abortion is murder. However, if you are a politician, or if you write opinions for the leading conservative magazine, you don't answer hypothetical questions like that on the record. For that same reason, you will never hear a liberal commentator share that it is their party's best interest to keep as many people as possible on public assistance. On rare occasions you have heard an honest one say that they were rooting against our troops in Iraq. But you get the point.
The answer to this question is as follows: "The first step is to pass laws to outlaw abortion with the exception of cases of rape, incest and where the life of the mother is physically endangered. We are a long way away from that point. Until we get there, there is no reason to address penalties or what comes next."
What Williamson just did was provide a useful talking point for swing voters because his ego was threatened.
What is the penalty for murder these days? Manslaughter?
Of course, there might be mitigating circumstances, like mental duress, I’ll admit...but still...
